This is a real problem with chemical sweeteners. I try to avoid these where ever possible. Not just because of the diarrhea but due to the multiple issues inherent in chemical "food".

Try to go for products with natural low energy sweeteners like stevia to avoid issues.

I am a whole food advocate and recognize others views will vary wildly.

Not me, but then again hardly anything does, even laxatives. The effect my wife though, something awful at times.

Look around and see if another type might have less explosive results, I know a few people who did not like art. sweeteners use Stevia, which is a natural leaf extract.

I haven't had my surgery yet, but I can not consume sugar free products. I become a gassy gal. I work hard to avoid chemical sweetened items at all costs. I am actually having issues with the super sweet liquid diet.< /p>

Depending on what sugar free product you are talking about there is probably a warning on the label. I haven't had issues with the popsicles but definitely the candy and once the NSA ice cream (but I've always had issues with ice cream so idk if it's related or not).

When I was doing 4-5 months of pre-op low carb dieting with my Dr's NUT I decided to try some sugar free candy because I couldn't get over my sweets craving. One Friday night I made dinner and later started popping some Russell Stovers SF candy. I mindlessly ate several before I started with the diarrhea. Stupidly, I assumed it was from whatever I made for dinner because I've always had IBS-type problems. I was miserable for several hours but finished the rest of the bag of candy. Much later I was checking the nutrition label again and noticed "excessive consumption can lead to a laxative effect." Well that solved the mystery! lol

I've learned my limits now. I try not to have more than 2-3 pieces, depending on the type.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
