Starting My Journey By Myself - Reaching Out For Help

Recommended Posts

Hello every one!

This is my very first post on this forum and is definitely the hardest one for me to write.

I am just starting on my bariatric surgery preparations, expect surgery in late Oct- early November... and I am very excited to finally be taking this step. The timing is working out both wonderfully and horribly for me.

Wonderfully because this year both of my boys will be in school and I have cut back on my volunteering so that I have a lot of time to devote to my health and lifestyle changes.

Horribly because we are a military family and my husband will be deployed just before the time of the surgery and throughout the majority of the first year. He's not to happy about not being here to support me and help out but grudgingly admits that in all other aspects it is a great time to to it. This type of window will not open up to me for at least 4 years, since in the spring we are being stationed overseas and I would have to wait until we got back to have the surgery.

I am generally highly independant and self-reliant, but for this I know I will need help. That is why I am here , but getting involved by asking for help is hard for me to do. After all isn't asking for help the hardest thing to do in the first place?

So there it is. Here I am, will you please take my hand and show me around? Let me know I'm not alone when I have two screaming kids and an empty bed to look forward to?

Thank you in advance.

I feel your pain about being a military family. My brother is deployed right now and will miss the birth of his daughter in October. He has not been there for his other 2 sons births either because he was on deployment.

It will be rough to juggle your kids and surgery and everything else, but just remember to take help where you can get it and do what you can, don't over do it.

I actually hired someone to come and clean my house for me while I was recovering.

Everything will work out okay, just try and stay positive....best wishes!

Thank you And best wishes to your brother!

I actually already have a house cleaner because I stick at cleaning and couldn't stand the filth anymore! LOL! I gave up my daily latte and it covered a monthly cleaning!

I just wanted to say welcome to the group. I have learned so much here just reading other people experiences. Everyone here is very supportive and always have great advice. I am a navy wife here in Jacksonville Fl. I have three kids and I totally understand how hard things can get durring a deployment. I am due to have surgery September 18th luckily my husband is on shore duty for the first time in 10 years and will be here to help me out. Also I have made some great friends that are here to help me out. If you have any questions about how the process is using military doctors feel free to ask. Good luck on your journey.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
