Heart Stopped On The Table

Recommended Posts

Well that sucked. Went in to the surgery--surgeon made 2 incisions--put camera in one and then slowly started inflating my abdomen.. Then my heart stopped. I was out for about a minute and they had to do chest compressions to get my heart started again. Surgeon decided that he should stop since this is an elective procedure. I saw a cardiologist in the hospital and went through tons of tests. My heart looks ok. They decided that it was just an unusual reaction to the gas and that I may have been too far under. I want more information than that......

So--I am back home with my entire stomach--couple of incisions--very sore body and chest--and a mouth so dry from all the medication that I feel like it is stuffed with cotton. Not so successful. My nurse said that the surgeon "lost his mojo" and was nervous the entire rest of the day. They said that this is a known, but rare, possible complication especially in women, but it normally results in a slow heart rate, not a heart stopping.

My surgery is scheduled once again for July 30. Now I am extremely anxious and frustrated.

Oh I am so sorry to hear that. Hopefully the 30th is a luckier day. My surgery is the 30th as well. Keeping fingers crossed all goes well for both of us. KIT

WOW!!! My guess is this was a vagal response maybe from the pressure in your abdomen from the CO2 inflation. The next time they may just proceed more cautiously. This is always a risk with any surgery, not just VSG. That's why we have to sign the consent form (which I bet nobody really reads).

Step back and take some deep breaths. And pray a lot if you are so inclined. Prayers and best wishes for you...Kathe

I used to pass out because of vagal response all the time when I laughed, it was horrible.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and I hope July 30th is a success. Stay positive and best wishes. Check in when you can.

The o hers have ut right. It seems like a vaso vagel response. My husband went in for a bilateral hernia repair and this happened to him after the first two incisions and he was full of air. They stopped the surgery and rescheduled it for a few weeks later. All his cardio workups were clear. It happened again doing the second surgery but this time it was at the end. I am so sorry!

My daughter was diagnosed with vaso vegal by her cardiologist. She has frequent unexplained episodes of passing out and turning greyish. Does this ever go away? Is surgery dangerous for people with this? It seems very very scary

That really is scary. Thank God you had a skilled team there to get you back. Get some rest and prep for the 30th. I'll make sure to say an extra prayer for you on the day.

What is a vagal response? I've never heard of this!

Mine was directly related to my heart rate. Is hers just random or triggered by something? I have found that mine started going away after I lost weight, my heart didn't have to work so hard.

They can put in a pace-maker type instrument, at least for most they can. Only "real" cure from what i have heard.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
