when can I take a shower

Recommended Posts

A little confused. The medical interns who saw me in the hospital before I was discharged said that I could take a shower in a couple of days. My discharge papers said I can take a shower after I get home but keep the bandages dry. That would be almost impossible.

Please let me know how long after your surgery you were able to take a shower.

Thanks.

I didn't have any restrictions and took a shower the next day. It would be best to call your surgeon and ask her/his advice if you're in doubt.

I could take a shower right away. I had no restrictions on showers. I couldn't take baths or go in a swimming pool for 2 weeks. That was my only "water" restriction.

I too was allowed to shower the following day, I was told to just let the Water run over the incisions, not to soap them or scrub them in any way. I was given a 6 weeks ban on tub baths, hot tubs, or swimming pools. I agree--ask your Dr. you will be amazed how much better you feel once you get in that shower!!!

Good Luck, and may you have a speedy uneventful recovery!

I agree with the advice here - ask your doc. I was able to shower the next day, but I didn't have stitches or bandages, so it might've been different for me. Someone here told me to use an antibacterial body wash. I don't know if it makes a difference, but it never hurts to be careful!

I showered before I left the hospital the morning after my surgery. I just let the Water run over the bandages and let them air dry.

But, like others have said, check with your doc!

I also was allowed to shower the day after I went home from the hospital. But, not to sound like an echo, I would see what your doctor wants you to do.

I showered in the hospital before I went home. They DID tell me not to submerge in a bathtub or pool. They said I could bathe or swim after my wounds completely healed over.

Call your doctor's office and ask them directly.

Same as most posts here, took a shower the day I got home. I had no stitches or bandages so I don't know if that makes a difference. My doctor used skin glue and liquid bandage

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
