Hello my name is Emily

I had lapband done in August 2010 I'm a young patient I was in a study for this lapband. I lost a total of 80lbs by April 2011 I felt great when I needed fills I would get so sick after the surgeon filled me each time this would happen one day I had to go to ER I was totally closed up and very dehydrated they had to empty my band ! I gained all my weight back ! My surgeon and doctors think the band isn't for me! I have been thinking about the sleeve ?? Some doctors say you can't get pregnant some say you can ? Any insight would be very appreciated thank you !! * emme

I had the sleeve almost two weeks ago and the doctor told me you have to wait two years to become pregnant. I am sure some docs are different that is what mine said. However, I am not looking to get pregnant any more so for me it was not a big deal.

As with most things regarding this surgery, there is a lot of opinions and variations. It is usually recommended that you wait 12-18 months to get pregnant after a sleeve. However, my surgeon said that he's had a few patients get pregnant after a few months and they have all had great pregnancies. Not ideal, but it happens. But you can get pregnant again, you just have to wait.

Sounds like you were being overfilled. Why did they keep giving you fills if you weren't keeping things down? Were your fills done under fluoroscopy or blind? How long have you been unfilled? There's something really odd going on with your aftercare. It sounds like whomever is doing your stuff is being borderline negligent.

There's a forum here specifically for band to sleeve revisions. You might want to check it out. I had a lapband for 6 years and am about 4 months out from my sleeve surgery.

The sleeve will only affect your fertility in a good way (weightloss, generically, tends to help increase fertility). There is nothing about the sleeve that keeps you from getting pregnant, though as others have mentioned, a fairly strict waiting period is usually enforced. I know of sone surgeons who actually require a written contract., though who knowns how defensible it is.

There's lots of insight to be had here, we just need a little more info on what you're seeking, so that we can gice you the right info.

The sleeve can be for you, just be sure you have dealt with any issues you saw emerge with the band. it isn't that you can't get pregnant, it that YOU SHOULD NOT.

Many, many complications through and after birth, including severe birth defects, arise from nutrition and health habits before conception and during the first trimester - when we don't know we are pregnant.

Good luck with whatever decision you find is best for you. keep us informed.

If possible if you have not, be sure the study has you noted as a 'fail:due to complications'.

I personally do not think the lapband should be allowed on the market, I am sorry you experienced all you did.

I'm post op day eight. The sleeve surgery cures in fertility and my doctor wants me to wait 18 months before we have a baby. Infertility is one of the reasons why many people do the surgery and of course to lose weight

My doctor also said if I was to get pregnant after a year it wouldn't hurt myself or the baby no babies ever been affected by it but they would suggest you wait 18 months

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
