I'm a rookie, just decided a couple of months ago that I am interested in getting the surgery after batteling with weight most of my adult life. My biggest motivator is my mom, she had the surgery about 11 years ago. She weighed about 250 at the time, she's 5'2. About a year out of the surgery she went down to 130, she looked great. She now fluctuates between 140-150, but still looks great. Her type two diabetes is well managed still, she no longer takes/needs the meds and sleep apnea gone. So the fact that she has been so successful with this surgery is very encouraging. I hope her story encourages some others on here as well, when looking at the long term impacts of the surgery:) Like I said I'm a newbie just now starting the journey. I see my primary care physician tomorrow to talk about general health issues and I'm going to bring up surgery. I'm praying all goes well and I'll have a positive post to follow. My current stats: :) 35 years young 5'1 and weigh...226 (wow never have admitted that before). Also I have Kaiser Permanente So Cal (specifically San Diego) so I'm hoping that's not a bad thing? I'm so glad I found this place!!!

Welcome! We have a SoCal Sleeve Group. I went to a meeting before my surgery to talk to everyone about life after the sleeve. You have a great example in your mom, but it is worth it to do your research and give yourself the peace of mind.

Congrats on your journey!

Thanks ladies, I just joined the so cal sleeve group. :) So my doctor's appointment went well, a lot better than I had imagined. For some reason I thought I was going to have to beg and plead, but my PCP was so understanding and said it sounds like a good idea. She has two other patients who've had the procedure and been successful. I have Kaiser so she asked me to call Positive Choice and they are mailing me a packet. After that I go to a seminar about the surgery and then I can sign up for the Options program. Does anyone know if my PCP has to do anything else? She said she won't need to see me until after the surgery, I thought I would be checking in with her before then

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
