After Surgery... Easy To Bruise?

Recommended Posts

Has anyone noticed a penchant for bruising easily after surgery? I have bruises down my arms and legs... any suggestions?

I've always been easy to bruise, but after surgery I'll have no less than two bruises on my legs at any given time! I get most of them from work, but I don't do anything that would give me a bruise, let alone ones that last for more than a week!

Yes. Especially if you are on blood thinners for blood clots. You will find you bruise very easily. I was on a 10 day post op regimen of blood thinners in my belly. I went to the dentist for a cleaning and bled something awful. My hygenist was taken aback and commented on it, then I realized what was going on!

Note to all: do not have dental services when you're on blood thinners! I totally forgot to tell them, but I was still able to complete the cleaning.

Im not on any blood thinners. Just my regular Vitamins. I just wondered if it was me... or what? Cause If I tap the doorframe with my arm I will have a knot and a large bruise. I moved this weekend and am now covered with them. I swear I've had two people ask me if I needed to speak with a police officer. I guess they think I am being beaten at home...lol

Anytime I have been on a low calorie diet I have bruised easily. I have had people mentioned it to me also. The next time you meet with the doctor you may want to say something just to make yourself feel at ease.

Good luck

Terri

I'm having the same problem just now. My cat likes to "knead" me and wherever she's kneaded me, I've got bruises! It was really difficult for me to bruise before surgery--I got a hairline fracture in my leg falling down marble steps, but never bruised! That was then!

Now I look like an impressionist painting.

As long as it isn't a Vitamin deficiency, it's ok by me. I don't care about the cosmetic aspect, just so long as I get to a healthier place.

That said, I suspect I'm not getting enough Vitamin K (a natural coagulant). I had two shots of heparin in the hospital the day of surgery and the day after (almost two months ago now so I'm pretty sure that's worn off by now). I'm going to ask my doc to order some blood tests soon anyway. I'll let you all know the verdict in case it can help anyone else on here.

Contact your doctor asap. If you are bruising that much, your platelets aren't correct and it could be serious if you cut yourself or bump your head. Better to be safe.

It could be because they give you heparin before surgery and it thins your blood to prevent blood clots.

I'm on 2 weeks of post op blood thinner injections and bruising a lot. The back of my calves are bruised just from having my legs up in my recliner.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
