Pre-Op Diet Is Unsuccessful.

Recommended Posts

My surgery date is July 30th. I started my all liquid pre-op diet 9 days ago. The diet consists of 4-5 Bariatric Advantage shakes, sugar free Jello, and sugar free Popsicles. I can also have broth. I need to stay within 700-900 calories a day. I had 2 days of the 9 when I went slightly over the 900 max because I ate a few more popsicles then I should have. I have ONLY lost 5 lbs. I have my last pre-op appointment with my surgeon tomorrow. I am afraid he is going to think I totally cheated, even though I haven't. I am also nervouse that the sleeve will harbor no success as well. Help....did anyone else have issues losing weight on the pre-op diet?

I dont think he will think you have cheated....some people lose more than others on the pre-op diet....

When I had WLS the first time around (I had lapband) I did two weeks of liquids, eventually doing only clears the last two days before surgery and only lost 5 pounds...

This time around, I lost 15 pounds, go figure....

Just try not to eat too many popsciles for these last couple of days and follow the diet to the letter...

You will do fine...

Sherry, don't worry, you are gonna be fine. Judging by your avi I'm guessing you are star starting this as a lower BMI sleever. "Only" losing 5 lbs really shouldn't be a problem. Many people read this forum and see staggering numbers posted, and assume if they dont hit the same numbers then something is wrong. This couldn't be further from the truth, we all lose at our own pace. The only guideline that I've found to be reliable is high BMI patients will post higher numbers than low BMI patients will.

This is your journey, own it & love it.

Good luck on your surgery! Life changes dramatically afterwards. This time is just prep time and I think it makes it easier to transition to what is to come... plus preps the liver. keep on truckin!

Hi OTR...

You are absolutely correct in that... I have totally been focusing on the incredible #'s some have through this journey. My BMI is 42. The avi is misleading, as the pic was taken 5 years ago prior to my 130 lb weight gain ugghhh. I put it there as a constant reminder.

Thanks all. The size of my liver and fat around the other organs was my main reason for the post. I really don't want any complications during or post-op.

It is so frustrating! The nurse assures me that the proof will be in the size of my liver and maybe not so much on the scale. I am hoping and praying that my liver is shrunk!

I am also on a pre op diet awaiting approval from insurance, they had me start last week because I can go in as soon as the 7th. I am a super-slow-loser too (which is exactly why I need the surgery) I have only lost 10 lbs since starting weight management in May. My diet consists of 1000 calories and no fat, I can supplement 1 meal a day with shakes.< /p>

Keep on going!!

Hi carolc,

I am glad to hear I'm not the only one that is losing slow. It is also reassuring to know that the scale may not coincide with liver size.

Thank you

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
