Dr Kim And Forest Park Medical Center

You were the 13th patient? WOW. That seems like too many patients!

My husband had his RNY at Pine Creek which is the sister hosptial of Forest Park. Yep, it's like an assembly line and I'd never recommend anyone have their surgery at either facility; especially since we showed up at 6 like we were told by the hospital and the doctor's scheduler and they didn't get around to us until almost 10 and even then, my hubby laid on a bed in pre-op for over an hour-and-a-half with about 20 other people in the same predicament. While I waited for him, at least 25 more patients showed up in the waiting room, all complaining that it looked like they wouldn't be operated on until well into the nighttime hours even though their scheduled time was late morning-early afternoon.

Some people get beepers. I didn't. After about 1 or 2, luggage in tow, I asked a nurse the status of my hubby and she just told me his room number and said I could wait for him there. At around 4, they brought him into the room (I was asleep on the couch after sitting in the waiting room all day).

I stayed in his room with him the whole time he was there (3 days) so that's a positive but the whole atmosphere gave me pause. FWIK, these two hospitals are business ventures amongst the more popular bariatric surgeons in DFW (now you see why most of the surgeries are bariatric and they do 3 zillion per day). I'm used to more structured hospitals where your surgery time to honored (to the nearest half-hour).

Which is why when I had my sleeve, I chose to pass up doctors who have television commercials because they all wanted to use those hospitals. The surgeon I used adamantly expressed that she would not sign on to do surgery at Pine Creek nor Forest Park and has no plans to do so in the foreseeable future although those doctors have asked her to.

I had my surgery this past Tuesday (July 31st) and all went very well. My surgery was scheduled for 8:30am so I was told to be there at 6:30am. Well, I waited and waited and about 4-5 hours past 8:30 I finally was taken to the Pre-op holding area to get ready. They have you take all your clothes off, underwear included, and get into one of those lovely gowns. Then they started IV's asked a bunch of questions and the waiting continued. Dr. Kim came by to talk for a few minutes, then the Anesthesiologist came by a little later. And 2 or 3 nurses involved in the surgery also came by. I was finally wheeled into surgery between 6-7 hours late. Throughout the day I would ask different people what the hold up was and I would get similar answers like, "well, you do have Dr. Kim" or something similar. I have no doubt that Dr. Kim is one of the very best in his field, he is conservative, precise in his actions and doesn't hurry up to satisfy other people. As his patient who is now 4 days post-op, I'm very pleased with him and have no regrets.

I think you will both be impressed. I was there 7/24 - 7/25 and felt very well taken care of. The nursing staff are very knowledgeable and professional, and responsive when you need something. The afternoon and evening after surgery is the worst, since you can't have even a wet swab for your mouth until after the swallow test the next morning. They give you plenty of fluids via IV, so you'll be OK, just uncomfortable with the dry mouth. They will provide a lip balm if you need it. I was told no petrolatum based lip balm (like Chapstick) in case they need to put you on pure oxygen, as it's flammable in that environment. It's only one day though, and well worth it. No regrets at all so far.

Patience and a positive attitude. It may be a struggle to get your liquids in at first and your Protein a little later, but it will all pass. Avoid the temptation to push yourself on the diet as you get to feeling a little better. A leak is NOT worth whatever you may consider eating. I behaved myself, am 9 weeks out, and have had no complications at all. My daily hunger is minimal and I DO get full with much smaller portions. This is SO worth the temporary inconveniences, and it will be for you too.

See you on the loser's bench!

I guess I feel a little different about the wait. If dr Kim operates on me and runs into a problem I EXPECT him to take the time to do this right even of that means taking longer than originally planned and pushing other patients to later.

With that being said I was told to come in at 430am and was the first tk be operated on at 630am. And I was operated on a little later than that. So that didn't make a lot of sense and I can only assume that the operating room was full with someone else's patient.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
