Warm Water in the Morning per Doc

Recommended Posts

My doc's post-op instructions including drinking warm liquids every morning (forever). I'm wondering who else does this because I haven't heard it mentioned by other bandsters. He said this is to clear out mucus.

I'm not a coffee drinker, so I'm thinking sugar-free hot chocolate. Does this sound okay or would that promote mucus?

my doc told me hot tea or liquid in the am helps to make you "less tight in the am" I personally have never been too tight in the am, only 2 weeks after surgery I felt very tight

Wow it sounds like your doctor does his homework. I had to learn from LBT that drinking hot Water in the am loosens the band in the morning. I still get tight some mornings, although I can eat just about anything the rest of the day. I will be getting a fill soon.

My Dr (Spiegel) didn't tell us to drink warm liquids but we do have to drink our Breakfast and thats to get our Protein Shake in and to give our stomachs a chance to stretch out from being in the position of crumpled up from sleep. It helps me a great deal. He does tell us to drink hot liquids anytime we cant get food down, it helps to open the opening for the band. Works wonders for me!!!!

Seppi, it really does work. I got in the habit of ordering a cup of hot Water when I would go out to eat. It helped me to keep from getting stuck.

Hot liquids are great for helping food to go down. They definitely loosen the band for me. My doctor did tell me that alot of his patients are tighter in the mornings and that warm liquids can help.

I usually try the following technique when I can:

Hot liquids before AM meal.

Hot liquids before lunch

One or two glasses of wine before dinner

All of these things seem to help alot. My theory is that they relax the muscles involved in the esophogus and open everything up.

When I was banded and tight in the mornings, a cup of hot coffeee or hot tea would help to open me up a bit. It is true what your Dr. told you, mine told me the same thing

I have a cup of hot tea each morning, a little splenda and some light cream or milk, yummmy. I have always indulged myself a few quiet moments each day with my tea. I get up 15 or 20 mins before everyone else needs to be up and have my tea. If you open my pantry right now there about 20 kinds of Decaf tea in there. I love Earl Grey, Lady Grey and my current fave is orange cranberry. (a fall special) I also like pumpkin tea when my local pumpkin patch has it. ~Mandy

Drinking hot (or very warm) Water is an Aruveydic practice. I learned about this from a massage therapist who stayed with me for a week and was super into yoga and knew a lot about the healing arts. (She was a glowingly healthy woman.) I thought it was kinda weird, but tried it and now I am absolutely HOOKED on hot Water. I usually pop a mug in the micro and drink a cup of hot water while the coffee's making.

So I still drink a cup of coffee or two in the morning, but after that I sip hot water all day. I honestly don't know if it does anything physical, but I find it very soothing and it certainly can't hurt.

Cheaper & eaier than tea too.

well, I like the morning tightness, cuase in all honesty hot Water (tea, coffee, soup) loosen my band a lot.

So I only do it if I want to trick the band, and eat a lot

Hot Water w/lemon juice was on old Diet Center trick. Same thing. It cuts the mucous, helps to clean the yuck off your teeth after sleeping, also gets the bowels moving early in the day. It truly does work.. and if it helps the band to loosen up a bit, that's all good too!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
