2 weeks tomorrow is my surgery with Dr. Patrick White! While I am excited about beginning this new chapter in my life (and finally taking care of me), I have some reservations!

I am a RN and know all the potential complications of surgery. What has been going through my mind lately is what if something unexpected happens? I am only 41, have 2 boys age 7 and 11, and have about 90# to loose. Is it worth it? I know my risk are low for complications (I am otherwise healthy, no HTN or diabetes, ect), but the what ifs have been bothering me:( On the other hand, I wouldn't hesitate to have an operation that was necessary, so why am I worried about this? I think I have had too much time to think about it! LOL. Thanks for listening!

Has anyone else had these feelings?

Has anyone had any serious complications?

Nope. No serious complications for me other than the major case of heebie jeebies I gave myself by obsessing over the "what ifs." Realistically, the benefits outweigh the risks (pun intended) and the anxiety is paralyzing. If you're going to project yourself into the future, make it positive. Plan what you'll do with those boys of yours when you can keep up with them because you're fit and healthy. Think about vacations and bikinis; little black dresses and romantic dates.

As an RN, you certainly can do a risk assessment. Put the numbers down in black & white, and then make your "What ifs" shrink in proportion. It's all in your head... which you control, so squish the catastrophes and maximize the rewards. (And keep busy. You still have two weeks to wait) :P

I am still pre-op, but I am not nervous at all. I'm so excited, and I can't wait to be sleeved. I certainly know the risks and possible complications, but the prospect of having a long and heathly life certainly outweighs those risks. I truly wish you the best on your journey, I'm sure you'll be just fine. And I agree... you're going to be running around with you kids and they'll be asking you for a break. !!!! Take Care :)

I just got approval for my surgery this week!! I have my appt on Monday with the dr and hope to set the date.

I decided on the sleeve for many reasons but one of them was the nurse who I saw first, was pregnant. She was going to have the surgery after the baby and she said hands down it would be the sleeve. Another nurse there said she had her surgery 10 yrs ago and if she were to do it now she would have the sleeve. They deal with bariatric patients every day so it was great to hear they think so highly of it!

I am beyond excited and can't wait to have it! I wish it was this next week!

Being a nurse, I too know all well how your nurse brain is in overdrive!

Before my surgery the what ifs were insane. I also didn't have any other issues besides my weight and have 2 boys, 13 & 9.

I had my surgery almost a week ago, 7/17 & I can tell you that hands down it is the best thing I did for myself & family. Sure it is a major surgery & you will be uncomfortable for awhile. I haven't had any real pain just soreness that gets better everyday. I am on liquids until the 31st & then move to purees. This will be the best thing you have ever done for your family...not just the losing weight but the time you are giving back to your family of having you around.

Sometimes, I think WOW I had most of my stomach taken out but I will be here to see my kids grow up & get to be part of their lives not just a part of the backdrop because I can't join in due to my weight.

Good luck and best wishes as you move forward. Wishing you a speedy recovery!!

I totally understand, Im 43, have 4 kids and am single. my bmi is not one of the highest -35 & i have about 100 pounds to lose. I find myself worrying about what if something unexpected should happen, what would happen to my kids, I have no family support & have just moved to a new state where I dont know many people. Im not scared for me, Im scared for my kids if something should happen to me. I have about 4 weeks til my surgery date. I do wish I could just lose weight on my own but Im 43 Ive tried long enough without success. I know for myself if I dont have this surgery now I will just gain more weight, have more weight related complications & a higher bmi. If we leave it, maybe in a few years this will be a necessary operation. Lets just do this now so we can look back in the next few months and be happy that our kids have a happier, healthier mum. We are going to do fine!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
