Question!

So on August 17th I will be going for my VSG.

I've come across many post talking about the infamous "liquid diet" before their surgery takes

place. Is this something that everyone must do before their VSG? When did your office give you your diet? I received my date on 7/12 and haven't heard anything yet. So I'm just curious to know, did you receive a pre-op diet and if so how soon? And Yes I know every dr is different.

Thanks for the feed back. xox

I was confused about that also. Apparently every doctor is different. Just call yours. Do you have another appointment prior to surgery? Come in with a list of questions. This forum is great for information and helped my with my list, but you still need to follow your own doctors protocol.

I actually have no pre op diet except I need to start eating better. Just the 24 hour liquid. I've started thinking about eating slowly, no Water or drinks during meals, and am replacing some meals with Protein Drinks.

I'm getting sleeved on August 20th. So good luck to both fous!

Every doc is different - some require a long pre-op diet, some a short one, and some (like mine) no pre-op diet at all.

There are various reasons given for the "why" of it all but it ultimately comes down to surgeon preference.

If you already have a date, you should have been told about any diet requirements. It can't hurt to make a call or send an email to your surgeon's office to double check.

The only thing I really think everyone should do prior to surgery is start tracking their food. It will really help you stay in the habit after surgery and will help you see what you're consuming now for comparison.

Good luck to both of you on your upcoming surgeries!

My surgery is scheduled for Aug 15. I have a 7 day liquid only diet - just Water and sugar free drinks/jello/etc. Pretty fierce.

One of the other surgeons I consulted with had a 24 liquid only and no endoscopy. But, I liked the surgeon and staff better at the place I chose. :-)

Dr. Kim has a two-week liquid diet of Bari-Essentials or Optifast, patients' choice. You can also have 1 cup of low-sodium chicken broth a day, and no limits on sugar-free Jello, Crystal Light, and the like. (I don't like artificial sweeteners, so I've skipped all that.) They said the reasons were twofold; firstly, it helps jump-start the weight loss so you have an immediate sense of success; and secondly, it helps shrink the liver in order to make surgery safer. I have heard of some people being denied surgery on the day of because they cheated and their livers were too large. THAT is a powerful motivation to not cheat! (And I haven't!)

I'm on my first day of the clear liquid diet for 10 days. I had a cup of hot tea with lemon and splenda and I blended up my chocolate Protein Drink with some ice a little lemon juice and vanilla. It was very filling and surprisingly tasted pretty darn good. I was told to buy the Premier Protein shakes at costco or sams club. They have 39 gm of Protein.< /p>

It's definately not a chocolate milkshake but very doable. I seem to be in the right mind set for this so I havent had too many hurdles. Good luck to you and do just what your doctor tells you to do and you'll get the best results!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
