Recommended Posts

I know this question is on here but I can't seem to find it. What do I need for my hospital stay and after I come home.

I havent had surgery yet, but I am a RN and most hospitals provide you what you need in the hospital. The key is to bring as little "needed" as possible :)

I reccomend chapstick... you're gonna need that! :)

and some comfy clothes to leave the hospital in.

Things I actually used at the hospital:

Bactene for dry mouth (before I could have ice).

Chapstick

Cottonelle flushable wipes

Eye drops (my CPAP) dries my eyes out

I took house slippers but didn't use them, I wore the little non slip hospital socks. But I wish I had worn them because the bottoms of my feet were tender from walking around on all that tile.

Disposable mouth freshener brushes (little toothbrushes that require no water). My crushed meds (BP) were horrifically bitter and these were the only things to get the taste out of my mouth

Things I am using at home:

The little squirt bottles they put ketchup and mustard in at restaurants. I filled them with Gatorade 2 and cold herb tea. This way I could squirt my drinks into the little medicine cup dispensers without having to get up or worry about spilling all over. Also I didn't have to keep an open glass with me on the recliner.

Still using flushable wipes

A thermometer for just in case. A few times I felt bad and couldn't tell if I was warm from being under blankets or running a low fever.

Sundresses - clothes with no waist to rub on my incisions.

What about heating pads and special pillows?

Under the Pre-Surgery Questions in the forums, the very first topic is what to bring to the hospital. There are at least 3 pages of posts where people listed things to bring to the hospital. I read through them all and created my own list for myself.

Here is the link (if I did this right). . .. hope this helps. :)http://www.verticalsleevetalk.com/topic/10081-the-official-what-you-will-need-for-your-gastric-sleeve-surgery-thread/

I didn't use either, the most relief and comfort I got in the hospital was from walking. I have used a heating bad since I've been home as my incisions are a bit more tender now - but it didn't do much for me.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
