Need Sleeve Friends

Recommended Posts

My name is Niki, i am getting my surgery on September 5th. I know a lot of people who have had wls, but only 1 who has had the sleeve, and she just did 2 days ago :o)

And although everyone seems to support my decision to have wls, I dont feel like very many of my friends understand what I am going through.

About me:

I am 32

Happily married for 12 years

2 kids

Live in Washington

Looking for support :)

HI Nikki and welcome, I am day 2 post op myself, I am still in Tijuana and doing very well. I am with a wonderful group of ladies and gents and one that I knew before I came because we met on here :) My friend Melissa, so that in itself was kinda cool..

Hi Niki :)

My surgery date is right before yours on the 3rd. I have had mixed reviews with my few friends that I told and my family. I think you might have come the same conclusion I did- I feel like this is my last option. Two of my closets friends are really excited and one of my other close friends said she didn't know how she felt about the whole thing and even feels a bit jealous. I understand. It's just plain tough. My parents freaked at first espcially since I am going to Mexico to have it done but my father has gone thought what I have his whole life and now wants to help pay for the surgery. My hubby and I are going down the 30th- to meet the doctor and see the facility- per my parents idea and concern.

Is your husband supportive? I think that would be my biggest issue if mine wasn't.

I'll stay in touch. I hope you have a great weekend- I'm off to work.

I am 38

Very happily married too- 6 years

2 kids by marriage

living in Colorado

Hi Nikki, I'm day 8 post op and feeling great. Just got home from my morning walk with my dog we did 1.25 mile this morning and moving around is really helping me feel good and on track. Down 9 lbs as of this morning. I self payed with Dr. Aceves in Mexicali MX and had the best care and experience there. The 3 days came and went so fast I can't believe I'm on this path already!! I am still on clears and am having no trouble sticking with it as I really have no hunger as of now so just drinking my Isopure and chicken broth. I believe the very best thing I did was go into it with a positive confident attitude about my future, only wish I would have done it sooner so I wouldn't have waisted another summer beating myself up about my weight. I didn't tell anyone about my surgery except my husband, whose support I had 100%. As much as I love my friends and family I really didn't want to have to "nurse" all of their questions, concerns or judgements since this was really about me and my immediate family. Hope things are as seamless for you and they have been so far for me. I'd say don't worry too much about making your friends understand what you're going through as much as preparing yourself for the life changing experience that you will go through.

:)

I would say 90% of the people I tell are very encouraging and excited for me. But there is the 10% that cant find anything nice to say, or even pretend. And it makes me mad when they say:

"arent you scared?"~~~No! Frankly, i am scared not to!

"I could never do that!"~~~~well then i am glad you dont need to!

Why cant you just stop eating bad?~~~~ actually i dont eat "bad". But i need help

Etc, etc, etc

LOL!

And even though most of my friends are very supportive, i dont feel like they understand it at all.

Thank God for my husband and kids! We dont have any family living in washington. But all of our families are supportive.

Jen C: congrats!! What a positive attitude you have!

I am soooo looking forward to my new life after surgery. I used to be so outgoing and fun! Now i decline invitations because i am worried i wont fit into chairs/booths, or wont fit in period. Nothing sticks out more than a chubby girl in a room full of 100 pound chicks ;) not that 100 pounds is even close to my goal :P

You will be your outgoing and fun self in no time!! I'm counting on the same for me too! I know how you feel about the "fitting" stuff. Love your comebacks and answers to the comments and questions people have. Sounds like you have a pretty confident attitude about the whole thing already! Enjoy your Saturday!

You have made the right decision!! I was sleeved on June 1st and have lost 44 pounds already and 25 inches! It was not only the best decision I ever made for myself, but more importantly, as it turned out, it was a life saving one for me. When he got in there to do the surgery, my organs were so covered in fat that my prognosis was very bleak... I would not have lived another year or two the way I was going and the scarey thing is... I didn't even KNOW it!! I had so much liver damage from fat that you would think I was an alcoholic (and I don't drink). I mean, I had shrank my fatty liver with the pre op diet before surgery, but the damage was already done. Thank God the surgery has stopped it's progression and now I can live a long healthy life (God willing). Don't let anyone talk you out of this most important endeavor... it might just save your life! Just do it! Good luck to you!!!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
