Medical Review Went Amazing, Except Irritated @ The Hubby!

Recommended Posts

So today I had my medical review and hubby demanded on going. What was suppose to be MY appointment turned to HIS appointment, he asked more questions about HIM and what HE needs to do to change HIS lifestyle. HE had more questions for the Dr. than I did, I was REALLY irritated.....

BUT all in all my review went GREAT, all my labs were good and now onto the next step toward getting SLEEVED.

I do have a question for you guys, the Dr. mentioned I should really consider the the Bypass vs. the Sleeve. He said that my labs indicate that I may be pre-diabetic, and that the Bypass would instantly reverse the pre-diabatic state. I am not feeling the Bypass too much, I really don't want that malabsorption issue. Did you guys experience the Dr's suggesting one over the other, and if so why did you choose the Sleeve? ANY feedback will help!

My doctor did not suggestion to me one over the other, I am also pre diabetic. I chose the sleeve because I have witnessed the other side of the patient with the bypass and it has not been pretty. The lap band was orginally at the top of my list but after really thinking about the fill factor I got over that quickly.

When I went to my medical interview, they didn't discuss what surgery I want. I will be meeting with the surgeon soon where I will discuss it with him. After all the research that I have done on the sleeve, I won’t let them change my mind. I feel like I am too young to have to deal with malabsorption the rest of my life. I don't like the idea of rerouting my insides either. So if they do bring up the complete bypass idea for me, then I think I may shoot it down. I really want the sleeve. Ultimately, it is your body and your decision.

I fell your pain about your spouse. Although for me it was my wife. She pretty much did the same thing. I tried to explain to ther that "being there for me" means letting me do what I think is best and trusting me. I am still not sure she got it but, in the end she supported me.

While my doctor did not recommend the bypass I know some docs like it better. It has been around longer. Statistically speaking people lose weight faster and there is a longer history with the bypass. But, just like you I avoided it becuase of the malabsorption issues as well as some of the other unpleasent side effects that go along with it.

good luck.

No help here with my what my dr recomended, he let me choose which surgery I wanted. So I did my research and choose the sleeve mainly because of the malabsorbtion issues. I read too many horror stories about the bypass and it scared the mess out of me. I can eat what I want with the sleeve only in small amounts so I can no longer be greedy if the food tastes too good. As for your hubby, I think it is a good thing for him to ask questions he may get healthy as you get healthy. Good luck to you. :D:P:)

I was diabetic (Type 2) and taking metformin at the time of my consult. I had done A LOT of research and decided that the sleeve fit my needs best. I went into the consult w/o sharing all the research I'd done and just shared my story and let the doctor give me his recommendations. He recommended the sleeve. So I felt very comfortable with my decision. He was very thorough to in explaining the choice.

I then came clean with my research and all the work I did. He seemed pleased too that I'd done so much research. My husband was there and it sounds like your husband and his behavior were very much akin to each other. After a over 2 hours with the doctor, my hubby came out of the consultation telling EVERYONE about his biggest takeway.....The human stomach can hold up to 5 liters of Fluid. He just kept going on and on about it and I wanted to really punch him after hearing it for the 10th time. LOL. (There was no domestic violence though...).

I weighed more than you and I found the sleeve to be the best choice for me....

1-I'm not trying to get pregnant anytime soon. That store is closed.

2-I didn't want to face malabsorption and the complications of re-engineering by intestinal track like the bypass does.

3-Bypass just seems too scary and invasive for me.

4-I know at least 3 ppl who've had bypass and still put the weight back on. Quite possible with the sleeve too, but at least your GI tract hasn't been sliced to heck.

I'm less than a month out.....

After 2 weeks post op my follow-up visit with my PCP went so well....

My diabetes has improved so my PCP took me off the metformin to follow-up in 30 days. I still check my sugar and if it rises above 200 then I'm to take a 1/2 dose and call the doctor. Haven't had to take anything.

PCP also took me off the high blood pressures meds at 2 weeks but I have to monitor it daily and if the top number reaches 150 then I have instructions to take 1/2 dose and call the doctor. Haven't needed to take anything yet. My BP since discharge hasn't risen above 130.

It's still early, but so far I couldn't be happier with these results.

I have heard of life-long problems with the gastric bypass which is probably because of malapsorbtion issues. There is also the factor that you still have your stomach tissue (fundus) in your body generating ghrelin - the hunger hormone. Many people I personally know lose weight like crazy - then gain it all back and their stoma (stomach pouch) is all stretched out.

Your profile indicates a body type much like my own. I am around 5 feet tall and my highest weight was almost 280. I have done great with the sleeve and will soon be in ONEDERLAND. It works!!!

I originally felt the band was best until reports of them becoming embedded in the liver after becoming too loose. The number of fills of saline and such turned me off. The idea of the bypass does not appeal to me. Some insurance comp. will not cover the sleeve. I believe the Vitamins and Protein is the same for bypass and sleeve so some absorption is better than none.

My doctor and I agreed on the sleeve. I had a scare after a motor vehicle accident, they found a mass on my pancreas in August and thought I had pancreatic cancer. The workup showed no cancer and the pancreatic specialist told me it was okay to have the sleeve. I was delayed several months because I had rotator cuff surgery in February. My left cuff had a full-thickness tear . So I had the sleeve surgery April 28th and I am extremely pleased.

What does your intuition tell you? Listen you your intuition! I was diabetic pre opt and when I asked my doc what her advice would be, she stopped a minute, thought about it, and said the sleeve. I basically am not diabetic and have my blood gluscose under control. I felt like the sleeve was better for me bc it's more permanent than the lap band and not as many complications as the GBP. I have fiend who choose the GBP bc her doc (at same office) recommended the GBP. Last time I touched base with her, she was having difficulties with eating and a lot of complications. She couldn't go out without getting sick when eating food. So I am so happy I made the right choice for me. Besides, there is more of a risk of stretching the pouch out in comparison to stretching our sleeve. This is a personal choice that you need to make. Ask yourself this question, Does your doctor have more experience with GBP, and what rational has he given you on why the GBP is better for you. I am no doctor, so this is JMO. :)

Changing...I agree that is the reason I do not want the Bypass, I too started this whole journey a few years ago wanting the Lap-band and so glad I didn't get that. I am still on the Sleeve bus, and hoping to get off at the losers bench!!

Just had my first appt with surgeon today too. She kind of suggested the by pass as well because she said my diabetes will go away almost instantly. I have research and have seen the results of the sleeve n my mind is made up. Just be sure u read all facts n info about both n make ur own choice. Best wishes to you

I never considered the LAP-Band because it just seemed too scary. To have a foreign object inside of you and having to get a fill every few months. It just creeped me out. Also I have several friends (at least 5) who've had the Lap-Band and I've seen their struggles 1st hand, many have had to get revisions.

Some have sustained the weight loss but they advised me not to do it. To me the sleeve was a no-brainer when compared to the Lap Band and Bypass procedures. It made the most sense to me.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
