Anybody Else Very Nervous About The Surgery And The Strict Diet Afterwards?

Recommended Posts

Thanks for this guys. I knew it would be restrictive but I didn't think I would feel SO hungry. It's not even that I'm hungry, it's that I WANT TO EAT. I am day three post op and apparently the only things I am allowed to have according to my Dr. are Water, Black Tea and Apple juice. There are other sources and even a friend of mine who recently did the surgery in Canada that have said they were allowed to have clear broths, Jello and even milk. What I wouldn't give for a glass of milk right about now! I am seeing my Dr. on Tuesday but it's hard being home, sipping on water all day long, recovering and not even being able to eat SOMETHING. I didn't think it would be like this. I thought I would be nauseated for days and have no desire to eat for the first few days... I am finding this much harder than I anticipated.

I don't go until October and was not nervous UNTIL' date=' I tried a friend's Protein bullet. Yuck, blech, ptooey!!! So now I'm a little anxious, but trying very hard to re-psych myself. I keep telling myself that I don't have to use those. Planning to order some sample packets these next few weeks. Hope I find a couple that I love![/quote']

Don't let Protein bullets shape your decision. Most people don't like them. Also, you have to be careful with them. A lot of them say they have a ton of protein in them and they even have "whey" (they type of protein we need) in the name. But the majority of the protein is collegen which is the wrong kind of protein for us.

I'm so glad I found this thread. Everyone's responses are so helpful - it's definitely something I'm fearful of. Part of me is questioning if I can "last" that long - through the pre op liquid diet and post op, but it does help knowing that I just don't yet know how I'll feel post op yet, so it's hard to wrap my brain around it. I think it's natural, having gotten to the stages where we are, to simply question if you can do it. I know it will be challenging (for me, mostly mental) every day and having tried and failed at so many different weight loss diet and lifestyle attempts, my biggest fear is - what if it won't work? What if I'm not mentally strong enough to do this? Reading people's experiences and positive encouragement and support makes me think I can.

I totally get how you are feeling, I am going through the mental part of this whole thing without professional counseling but I am managing to stay calm focused and cheerful thanks to this site. My family is not supporting me with this decision so you can imagine how hard it is for me with this. I think we have to be mentally ready for this before we undergo sugery. I have grown from this experience and I haven´t even ha the sugery yet! Birdie18 just think first things first. First I believe is getting ready mentally, then emotionally, then gathering strength to do this the best way, at least that´s what I´ve been doing. I think we all here understand what you mean about the weight loss fails... but don´t give up on something you can´t go a day without thinking about! I think you can do it!

Thanks for the words of encouragement! I've decided that I'm only telling my immediate family (dad, mom, brother) but not anyone else beyond that. You can just PM me any time you need the support! I know I need all the help I can get. :) One step at a time!

Thanks PDX-man & back to amy!

I was able to read up on the different kinds of Protein on the forums and feel so much better informed! I'm inputting info onto my phone to help when I shop! I'm learning so much every day and appreciate everyone's willingness to share their knowledge and experiences.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
