Strawberry seeds ???

Recommended Posts

My nutritionist said we need to avoid all seeds, including strawberry seeds. I like adding frozen strawberries to my Protein Shake to alter the taste occasionally. Does anyone else eat strawberries and if so, do you ever have problems with them? Did you have them during liquid or mushy stages?

Thanks! One week from today and I'll be an official member of the club!

The guidelines I received said the same thing, but what they give us is designed for RNY patients. When I followed-up and asked about strawberries specifically, she told me they should be fine as long as I chewed very well and only swallowed small amounts at a time.

I added them (I think) in late mushy stage, to help flavor up my Protein drinks, an blending with natural yogurt to get a healthier version of the strawberry yogurt you can buy off the shelf.

Once I progressed to solids I added strawberries. For some reason I do feel them more than other foods (goes for most fruits), but I've never had a problem with them... and I was strawberry crazy during the season this summer.

I've been eating loads of berries of all kinds, and cherry tomatoes, and lots of things with little seeds, figs, etc, absolutely no problems here.

I was never told to avoid seeds. I ate seeds the entire time I was bandedand had no problems with them. What is the reason for NO seeds?

I've been having strawberries in my protien shakes for over a week now with no problems. After trying all different kinds of protien, the only thing I could stand is unflavored protien powder, Tropicana light and healthy OJ, and frozen strawberries. YUM!

Those that have divertuculis (sp) and other colon issues should avoid seeds like these. They can get in the colon and fester into infections. My doctor doesn't allow us to eat anything like oatmeal and powdered Protein because he thinks they clog the band. I treat seeds the same way and avoid them.

I put strawberries, bananas, and blueberries in my Vodaka and OJ smoothie, (I try to drink healthy), and have never had any issues. Although, I usually use the Magic Bullet to make the smoothie.

What brand of unflavored Protein are you using?

Thanks everyone for the update. I'm glad to hear no one has had any issues.

People with diverticulitis have small areas along the colon that pocket out like little open bubbles along the walls of our intestines. These are super sensitive and easily irritated as well as able to pocket tiny foods... imagine then what could happen to a small sore spot that a tiny seed gets trapped in, along with stomach acids. Flare ups of severe pain, irritation, infection, bleeding, potential for rupture... low-residual diets are generally recommended for those patients. (one low in fibers, seeds or other nondigestibles) My guess would be that GB patients with so much of their intestines re-routed aren't able to digest seed type foods, so the concern could be that those foods would be irritating to what's left of their digestive tract.

I personally wasn't told not to eat them, and haven't had any problem with seeds.

What brand of unflavored Protein are you using?

On a whim, I bought something from my local Vitamin store. It's made by Jarrow Formulas. Unflavored whey Protein. Each scoop has 85 calories, 1g. of fat, 1 g. of carbs and 23g. of protein. I have tried numerous brands, but so far this is the only one I'm able to tolerate. The others just left a funny taste in whatever I put it in. With the tropicana light and healthy oj (only half the calories and sugar as regular oj) it tastes very similar to an Orange Julius. :-) I've also added the protein to Soups and mushies with no change in the taste.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
