How soon after surgery has anyone tried eating popcorn? I am just over two weeks out and have been eating chicken and fish with no issues. Tomorrow night I have a free ticket to see Batman and there will also be free popcorn. I will eat before hand because I need to get my Protein in, but I was thinking about trying a few bites of popcorn too. Do you think that could hurt?

Thanks

Yes, I think it could hurt.

The hulls from popcorn could easily get stuck in your staple line, get infected and you could potentially have a leak. This is one of the reasons why strawberries are on the do not eat list for 3 months. You just want the staple line to be completely healed over before introducing something like this.

Does the risk outweigh the benefit?

Is popcorn on your list of approved foods for 2 weeks post-op? I would stick to your doctor's list.

I was not cleared for popcorn until at least six weeks out. It could hurt you!

Dang it. You all brought up good points. I hadn't thought of the possibility of hurting myself. I will not risk it, no reason to take that chance.

Thank you for your input.

I went to the movies at about 7 to 10 days out and took some Jell-o and my little plastic spoon! Trust me you will not want the popcorn. I was stuffed and satisfied.

I am 6 weeks out and was told that I have no restrictions. Well, except carbonated beverages which are a no no for life At my appointment today I was told to eat very little of things that expand in your stomach. popcorn was one of the examples I was given that does that. Also, PDXman pointed out the most important thing. The hills could get caught in your staple line. That would be detrimental to your health.

That's exactly what I did too! :)

I am sitting here at the theatre and there is popcorn all around me. Thank goodness I ate some chicken before hand. I am too full to try it anyway, but this is torture. I think it will be good for me though. I need to get used to other people eating the crap I used to. Still hard though

Whoa! I didn't know about the strawberries either. I thought they were okay if they were blended well in a smoothie. I hope I am okay also!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
