The Opportunity Cost Of Weight Loss Surgery

Recommended Posts

Excellent piece Carla. Prior to surgery I only thought about all of the good results that WLS would bring. I had never even thought about the intense food mourning that I would experience - and am still experiencing now. Anyone who says that WLS is an easy way out is wayyyyy wrong. They have no idea! This is by far the hardest thing I have done in my entire life.

CLK thank you so much for this post - and all of your posts for that matter. You give me hope!

Good luck to everyone!

Ditto! :)

I was really struggling with that food "break up". I go to a psychologist and for me personally, it has helped a lot. He compared my relationship with food to a previous unhealthy relationship I had in my marriage. I would say I was fed up with him and would want to seperate, only for me to get sad a few days later and feel like I couldn't live without him. The same with a diet. I would get fed up with my food addiction and vow to break up with it. Only to get sad later and reconcile with my unhealthy eating.

He ended up leaving for someone else. At first I was completely devastated. But as time went on and I started to heal emotionally, I could see just how very toxic that relationship had been and I probably would have kept going back had he not found someone else. I relate this to how now that I have had surgery, my break up is final. I am facing some long buried emotions and it isn't always easy. But the weight of the world is literally being lifted off my shoulders both physically and mentally.

Carla, your post was great and something we can all identify with. Thanks for taking the time to post.

Great posts! I am pre op and have been asking myself the same questions. I'm going to go to counseling, just for that reason. I'm hoping I will learn to like exercise, and that will fill the void. What did you all do to fill the "food void" in your life, if anything? Really appreciate some help!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
