Surgery Tomorrow! High Blood Pressure.

Recommended Posts

So I went in for my pre-op visit today, surgery tomorrow at 8am! My blood pressure was 168/97, so the nurse called my surgeons nurse and told her. When I was leaving, the pre-op nurse said surgery is still planned for tomorrow unless I get a phone call stating otherwise. Ugh. Now I feel like I have to worry about that. Anyone else have this issue?? :(

My blood pressure was always at least that high, even though I was on four bp meds. But surgery went ahead, and afterwards, my bp shot up even higher thanks to all the IV fluids. I had a hard time convincing them that this always happens to me, but it would subside once I got off the fluids. It did.

I'm happy to report that even though I am still on the same four meds, now my numbers are well within normal!

Thanks for the quick response! The pre op nurse seemed like she didn't believe me when I said that I've never been diagnosed with hypertension. I said "could it be because I am nervous?" She said not usually..but then she said there is such a thing as "white coat syndrome" where patients bp goes up when seeing a dr or nurse because of nerves. So..I don't know. She didn't clarify much for me, and then when she said everything will go ahead as planned UNLESS I get a phone call. So now I guess I will just wait. Thanks again for responding so quick, my nails are slowly disappearing. Lol

Did they re-check your blood pressure or go off that one reading. Seems to me the prudent thing to do would have been to re-check the reading further into the visit before making phone calls based on one reading when the person is probably nervous to beging with.

There is a difference between going into a surgical procedure with a diagnosed history of elevated blood pressures controlled on anti hypertensive medications and going in with new onset hypertension.

Your surgeon may want an evaluation by your PCP or a cardiologist to provide caridac clearance for surgery.

She checked it on the upper right arm and it was really high so she said she thought wasn't accurate so she did it on my lower right arm and it was 168/97. So she did it twice and went by the second reading. I just hope everything will be ok. Good luck to the other tomorrow sleevers, ill be praying!! :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
