So, my parents are saying that I'm crazy for wanting to go to Mexico for weight loss surgery. They said I need to watch the news because there has been several mass killings down there close to the border. This scares me... I know this is a stupid question, but they seriously have me worried now. Lol

I did my surgery in Mexico 3 months ago and did not have any problems. I was scared but way more excited to get on with my life. You can do it and all will go well.

Most of the mass killings are rival drug cartels killing each other off. You can die anywhere and anytime.

What part of mx are you going? Most of the probs are in Juarez. I went yo Tj, and never felt unsafe. Its not like your going to be hanging out in dark alleys, and bad areas. You'll surely not be taken anywhere unsafe. You're mom is just sounding off what she has heard in the past, and there have been major changes in safety in the last year. You'll be fine!

Tijauna. I think they just like freaking me out about it. I should have never even mentioned it to them. I have no support system at all about getting the surgery and going to Mexico. Their answer to my problem was "just put a lock on the refrigerator." If it was really that simple, nobody would have weight problems, right?

Honestly, it all comes down to ignorance and racism. (not saying your parents are) Media portrays Mexico as some crazy sex, drugs and murder capital where everyone shoots people.

I have people that jokingly call my surgery "A shady Tijuana surgery" even now. Most people that were skeptics are now saying how great it is I got it.

You will be fine and safe, don't be stupid and wear Gucci with a Rolex and you won't be bothered :)

You can die being fat. Or walking on side walk. Some parents need to let their kids live their own life. I read many ppl here getting surgeries in Mexico. The us is too freaking expensive. If your ins dosnt pay. I would go to mexico

I have heard so many wonderful stories about people having their surgeries in Mexico. Hell, there are places in the U.S. that are too dangerous to go to as well.

as a parent - I'd be just as worried as her parents. it's not about letting kids live their own lives, being a parent doesn't go away when you kids grow up, trust me. all parents want their kids safe and sound, that's all - and yes, the media does paint a horrible picture and i know that all of Mexico is not that way - but there are definately areas to avoid and i'm sure that none of the surgery centers in mexico is anywhere close to them.

do your homework and present it to your parents, showing them where you will be and such and how the staff will care for you while you are there. they just need to be reassured and I'm sure they will support you at that time.

Your parents fears are not unfounded. I had my surgery in the States, but I know 2 people that went to Mexico and lived to tell about it. I also know several people that go on a mission trip to a border town 2x a year. They always come back. :). May I suggest you research the area you want to go, get some crime stats, and hopefully this will put their mind at ease. At least maybe a little??

I had my surgery in TJ and it was the best thing I ever did. My wife, when presented with the option of having it done here in Las Vegas or TJ, wanted to go back to TJ to have it done. I'm in the process of arranging to have it done for my youngest son in TJ. It was safe and we were never unescorted, even out socially. It was great.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
