Hi, I am new to the forums. I have finally after 15 long years decided on WLS. We are currently stationed in Bogota, Colombia and I have decided to have my surgery here. I will have my first meeting with the surgeon this week to discuss my surgery options. I personally haved decided to go with the sleeve; however I am sure he will tell me my options. I have known several people here to undergo WLS and have had great results. At first I was very concerned with doing it abroad, but through research figured it would be a little easier. My husband has been so amazing through this whole decision making process.

I will keep you posted on my experiences in Bogota, Colombia.

Please do keep us posted. My surgery is done already (I went to Mexico), but I am interested in how things are in other countries. :)

I will for sure. The biggest issue is having surgery at high altitude. We are like at 8200 feet. The one person I know did tell me she had difficulty breathing afterwards and they gave her blood thinner shots, to help reduce the risks of blood clots.

I am still excited. The best part is I have BCBS and being overseas I just have to meet the criteria, but I don't believe the process is as long.

May I ask what you think of their healthcare in general? I only ask because at some point I would like to move abroad and S.America is one place I have considered.

Good luck on your journey!

I suppose it depends where you are living and exactly what you are having done. I don't believe all places are created equal. I can say for the most part the healthcare in Bogota is good. Many of the doctors and dentists are US trained and speak English. Although, I speak Spanish, I really prefer anything medical or dental be communicated in English.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
