HI Everyone,

I had my surgery 10 days ago and since starting with full fluids I am getting terrible heartburn every time I consume anything. It is even happening with Water too sometimes.

What can I do? I have started taking a sip of mylanta....and chew on a tums when it gets real bad.

Please tell me this is going to stop?

Is it oOK to take over the counter stuff like Prilosec etc

Help!

I'm preop but my standing script order is for one prilosec two times a day. For three months. That should really help you.

Crystal Light or flavored water goes down much easier than plain Water.< /p>

You need to contact your surgeon for that answer, but you probably need to be on something, I am having heartburn too. The surgeon told me it is because my esophagus it raw and that it will heal. He gave me Zefran as needed and I need it 2-3x a day.It is for nausea but it works for heartburn too. Preop I also took protonix daily. If the heartburn continues, I will ask if I can start taking it again.Good luck.

I am 5 weeks out and it happens to me with just Water as well and just about all foods. I never had it pre op anmd it is making eating such a chore, taking all the pleasure out of what little I am allowed.

Please someone further out, tell me this will eventually go away.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
