Of All The Crap You Took To The Hospital What Did You Actually Use?

Recommended Posts

Yeah, whatever you do, don't forget Joe! LOL

Yep, do not forget the Joe.

Seriously, that man has now sit by my bedside through two surgeries. He walked me around the halls and everything. I'm blessed.

You can always trust a guy named Joe! That's why I named one of my boys Joe ;)

I brought wayyyy too much clothes. I though I would probably change once or twice and wouldn't want to wear the same stinky sweats.

I wore them the whole time, well except when I went to Ensenada.

I only used my phone, lip balm, tooth brush/paste, shampoo/conditioner, socks, sweats and slippers. I used my laptop once to post on here :) But I could have just as well used the hotel computer.

I didn't put on makeup or even care about my hair.

I spent two years in hospital with my son so I'm a pro at this lol...which is why I'm outpatient! I hate hospitals!

But I do always bring an extension cord as well as a plug in night light and music I enjoy as background. I find the noise of hospitals difficult to sleep with so I have my babies night time music play all night (which is probably goofy lol).

I always have a picture of my family for the bedside table and I bring a favorite glass or mug since plastic and the like gross me out.

On long stays the parents also typically brought wine with them (what happens in the parents lounge stays in the parents lounge) but given we are all the patients, that's probably not a good idea lol.

I'm bringing a spousal unit (my hubby....not joe) to take care of me in the hotel. That beats the hell out of some big nurse who needs to take your Bp every four hours wether you need it or not cuz she has a shift change (they can't leave without making sure their patients aren't dead).

Phone

Comfy comfy comfy (and oversized!) pajama pants. Luckily it was winter. ;)

Robe so I wouldn't be... *ahem*... exposed in the gown.

Slippers for all that walking I had to do.

Toothbrush and toothpaste. Your mouth feels so gross after doing leak tests, dry mouth, possible vomiting...

Hairbrush so I didn't look like a scary beast.

Didn't bring a computer. Was too drugged up to care!

[*]A non-wax lip moisturizer. One of the first things I can remember is asking someone to schmear my mouth with moisturizer' date=' and being euphoric when it finally happened. I felt like I was in a porno or something, basically pouring that stuff all over my entire face.

This one made me laugh!

The post op pain meds could of helped... Too!

I brought my cell phone, ipod, lip balm, my own pillow, and a nice soft blanket. It felt so good to have something familiar and comforting over my bed.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
