(((Kimmy))) It is SO hard to deal with our parents being ill and dying, but it is a part of life for many of us, unfortunately. I hope you do get to go spend some time with him, for both of your sake's, during this part of his journey. This is some precious time for you both to share your love with one another.

Alcohol, or any other negative addiction, can definitely grab you right now because you are vulnerable. As others have suggested (and you have mentioned), exercise is a much better addiction and will give you the energy you need to get through this time. :)

Thanks everyone. I drove to Oregon Saturday morning and stayed till last night, visiting with him. My brothers also came from California so we had a good visit reminiscing and laughing. My mom is having a hard time on and off , to be expected. My one brother is still there, my other is going back up tomorrow and I will be back up Friday. He is at peace with the situation and that helps me tremendously, I dont want to see him suffering. We are waiting on the doc to come in for an update. Thanks again my sleeve family, your kind words mean so much.

Kimberly,

I know exactly what you are going through. 1 1/2 years ago my father walked into the ER thinking he had the flu. Apparently he had a heart attack earlier in the week and did not know it. After finding the blockage and stinting it, he was put into an induced coma and died exactly 1 week later from all his organs shutting down except his heart which had been repaired. He was 60 years old and was completely healthy except for type 2 diabetes which he was managing. The difference here is you have the opportunity to talk to your father and tell him everything that you want him to hear while he is still alive even if it is over the telephone. I can only hope that my dad died knowing that I loved him and that he was able to hear the things that I said to him while he laid there in a coma. I will be praying for you and your family.

Thanks so much Kentucky Girl for your kind words. Your Dad did hear those things, I know he did. My biological Dad died at 54 and he was in a coma too and I sat with him for two weeks every night talking to him and I did get a few slight responses from him, even if it was only a slight eye opening or a small squeeze from his hand, I knew he heard me.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
