African-American Women Healthier With Higher Bmi

Recommended Posts

I was wondering if any of you were aware "

In fact, African American women's risk factors did not increase until they reached a BMI of 33 or more and a WC of 38 inches or more." I know we always felt that BMI was wrong. So Obese is normally a BMI of 25 but for African-American women it is not until your BMI is 33. It is in large due to the way our body fat is distributed amongst our body. I know we all considered this surgery to get healthy. So for many of us healthy as an African American Women is truly different as it is for other women. If you are using normal BMI standards and not taking into an account that it is like 3 points higher for African American Women you may be setting yourself to be under weight or close to it, when staying within a "

Normal weight" = 18.5–24.9

. We should be aiming for

African American Women Normal weight = 21.5–27.9

If that makes sense. I know some of use are not shaped like your normal sister but for those who are just something to consider is all.

I just thought it was good food for thought when considering what goal weight or BMI you are trying to reach.

Interesging but I think I will stick with a bmi below 25%, 33% is a little too high for me.

I agree with you on this post. I am 5"10" and according to the BMI I should weight 179Lbs which to me is too small. You also have to take into account for frame size and the natural extra "junk in the trunk". I would love to be 200Lbs. I think that would be Great for me.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
