Ater surgery question

Recommended Posts

I had to stay overnight with nothing ingested (they brought me ice only after I promised not to swallow it). Then to get out of the hospital I had to drink 1 ounce of Water in an hour. Then 4 ounces of the worst chicken broth I'd ever had (neon yellow and kinda sludgy) in an other hour, then 4 ounces of Optifast in an hour. It was sort of an escalating level of vile fluids - except the water, that was sweet relief. But still, the broth and optifast were better than the barium! I was finally released at 7pm.

I was outpatient for mine and immediately after waking up from anesthesia they handed me a room temp bottle of Water I was able to drink it right away and was done with it after about 2 hrs. and then drank another one within another two hours, then pee'd and then went back to my hotel room. The next day I had an Atkins protien drink (premixed not from powder) doctors orders to drink 3 of them a day and as much water as I could plus some juice or skim milk. Within about 5 days I started to drink slightly thicker liquids like blendered Soup, then after 7-8 days creamier liquids like creamed Soups, cream of wheat made with lots of liquid, blendered pea soup etc. but not until after noon, I started every day with a Protein Shake (premixed). After two weeks I was eating soft to mushy foods like mashed potatoes, thicker cream of wheat, mashed egg salad, super mashy chicken salad, etc. Week three soft foods like scrambled eggs with bits of hotdog mixed in, baked potatoe with chees sauce, baked Beans, soup with chunks in it like chicken soup etc., and week four onto pretty regular food but still being VERY careful and not eating anything too difficult like steak or anything. Making sure whatever I ate was somewhat tender and moist. At all stages and even now I avoid bread, Pasta, and rice. Haven't had any of them yet.

I had outpatient surgery, and I was home by 2:30 that afternoon. They gave me ice chips, Water, ice tea, and a popsicle! One tip....make sure to take a pillow with you for the ride home. It kept the seatbelt off my incisions! And 2 weeks off should be perfect! I went back in 4 days and it was wayyyyy too soon! GOOD LUCK!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
