Ater surgery question

Recommended Posts

When in hospital, what did they give you go eat/"drink" after? My date is getting close and am obsessed with reading these boards these days.

I hope 2 weeks off from work will be enough.

Hi Cindy,

I know just how you feel. My date is coming up too. 9/13 :) !!

I think they give you Water and broth in the hospital. I've read, anyway.

Best of luck. When is it? Where?

I was given Clear liquids, after banding, on the first day. The next morning they let me have Jello and Soup. I was on liquids for 2 weeks.

Good luck. Depending on what type of job you do, 2 weeks should be plenty. You'll probably still have moments of soreness.

Shawn

My doc keeps patients over night. The next day I was allowed clear liquids, broth and apple juice (that was my diet for 2 weeks after surgery, clear liquids), I was also given coffee with skim milk.

GOOD LUCK !!!!

Our nutritionist told us they will bring 3 plastic shot glasses with Water, broth, and juice.

Hard too imagine 3 shot glasses being enough!

Don't be surprised if it is not enough. The band is not designed to restrict liquids.

By day 3 or 4 I was expected to be able to get a glass of clear liquid an hour down.

Different Surgeons have their own criteria. My band was done as an outpatient. I didn't have any kind of complications so, about 3 hours out of surgery I was "kicked" out the door. lol They did not give me anything in the Surgical Center other than the barium swallow for the x-ray. I was told to stay on clear liquids for several days. Just follow your Surgeons directions. If your not clear on what they are, then ask!

Have a great band journey!

Terry :)

Hi!

Congratulations on getting your band soon. We are pretty close -both New Englanders.

You should be getting info from your surgeon and hospital about your surgery. Some make you stay overnight, some do not (unless complications). I did not. My pre-surgery booklet from the surgeon explained I was to get clear liquids for 48 hours (including day of surgery). It also said if I was admitted overnight than no matter what else the food tray may have on it-do not eat it!

Clear liquids include Water, clear broth, Jello, juice. I had my surgery at 7:30 and was out of there by 2:30.

Your doc should have very clear instructions for you. Good Luck-let us know how you do.

oops- I forgot to add that they had me taking a quarter of a percocet with Water and a straw until I had finished 2 whole pills. I was offered continuous water or juice. It really helped to pee before I left. One hint-the water was room temp and the juice was not! I didn't know it was cold and I did feel it, not painful but not pleasant.

My doctor keeps us overnight too. The day of the surgery I was only allowed to suck on ice chips. The following morning, before I went home, I was given clear broth and Jello.

I went home the same day. They gave me Water in the hospital. But I wished that I had brought some with me for the ride home, I was so thirsty!

I too was kept in the hospital, and was given broth, apple juice, Jello, and tea or coffee. I had no trouble with any of it. But they brought me a small sized bowl, and a regular juice glass, nothing like a shot glass. I also was allowed to drink as much Water as I wanted.

Good Luck on your upcoming surgery, while the post op diet is trying at times, the sclae dropping makes it MUCH more bearable!!!

Kat

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
