How long after surgery do we have to worry about leaks happening? I was told that there is always a possibility. I though once our tummy was healed that was it. I ask the question and before my surgery because i was scared out of my mind and was assured by the nurse about how the stomach heals and the scar tissues and eventually the staples all off. Now I'm hearing maybe! Please someone give me some kind of info I am really scared right now.

I am not sure about how long for the concern of leaks; however, the staples are made of titanium. They do not fall out. Scar tissue will form around them; but they are not dissolveable.

I had my surgery on July 2nd and my doctor gave me the impression that I was past the point of getting a leak. He just kind of phrased "you are out of the woods"...I am officially ten days out today.

I ask what happens to the staples and was told that in time they fall off and the seal has the scar tissues

I was told it takes 12 weeks for the stomach to heal and after that, there is very, very little chance of complications.

My surgeon told me that duing the first four to six weeks the risk for leaks is greatest. He said after that the risk is very minimal.

If you got a bad enough ulcer in your stomach it could leak without any surgery... I imagine there is a slight risk for just about anything that can happen. I wouldn't stress on it. Just my opinion.

I will be have the surgery in 4 days. May i ask if you all just have staples?

My doctor uses the staples and then he stitches over that as a double precaution.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
