I've tentatively selected Dr. Lavin in Louisiana even though I live in California. I got a great feeling from him on the phone plus he's a lot cheaper than some of the doctors near me. Should I be concerned about how complications will be handled? His office told me that I'd need to go back to their hospital in Louisiana if complications arise. Is that common? I know a lot of folks go to Mexico. Is it worth around $4K (travel factored in) more to have it done locally?

You would not have to go back there - but check and see wha tyou will pay (you have to have follow ups somewhere) out of pocket to cover office visits once you are home - it might make going local more reasonable.

NO experience with Mexico, but I would not.

I went to Dr Umbach in Las Vegas. It was $10,400 and he works out of a Center of Excellence. I, and others using him, have had a great experience. I wouldn't do Mexico, but that is my personal preference.

Before you did it, did you discuss how complications would be handled? Dr. Lavin includes complication coverage for 1 year but the work needs to be done in Louisiana.

My insurance covers everything except the procedure itself, so any complications would be handled fine locally. All of my pre-op and post-op testing has been covered.

I'm having surgery with Dr. Washington in South Carolina. I live in New Jersey. They were having a "deal" going on for 8,000...to gain more surgerys to become a center excellence. The price is now 18,500. All my testing (blood tests and endo scopy) are included in the price. As well as a 2 day stay at the conway medical center...and a follow up the following week. I'm required to stay in the area for 12 days. Which is great b/c i need a long vacation ;) .Dr Washington was recruited there from NJ and said if i have any problems I can go to one of his collegues. Otherwise post op follow ups will be done Via Phone and if i want to come back to SC i'm more than welcome.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
