Day 1 Post Op..? About Breathing

Recommended Posts

Well. Made it through surgery. Last night was a wtf did I do to myself night. A lot of pain groggy etc. I'm feeling better this am. Did a lap around the floor. I have my blow into it to make ball thing. But I can't get the balls to move. And have a hard time getting a deep breath is this normal?

Well suck don't blow. Or the calls won't move.... But yes its normal, just keep trying. It hurts when you suck in hard but that's the point. To.make sure Fluid doesn't build up in your lungs. Good luck!

I'm pre-op so I can't answer your question. But, did you take any meds for the pain?

Yep...it's "inspiratory"....you suck in through it, not blow out. :)

It's a spirometer. Definitely suck and not blow. It was hard for me those first few days, but it's necessary to avoid possible pneumonia. Congrats on being sleeved! I wish a speedy recovery to you.

Joy sounds like ur doing well. This morning is much better than last night. I'm doing the spirometer also....can't get above 1250 yet. Feels like I can't really breathe deeply. The only pain u have is gas pains starting. I'm waiting on swallow study results so I can start sipping !!

Oh, yeah! The incentive spirometer! I forgot about that little torture device. LOL!

It does get easier, the further out you are from surgery. I could barely get that ball up when I was just a day out. When I was sent home from the hospital, the instructions were to use it every single hour. I hated it, but I did it. It actually turned out to be really satisfying to see the improvement and be able to quantify it.

Congrats on your sleeve!!!

It makes you feel really inadaquate at first, but keep trying it's important to improve your lung function.

The nurse told me to do 10 breaths in a row, was about to pass out. Doc came in and said to do 2-3 at a time, 10 over the hour, or I'll hyperventilate. So space out your sucks.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
