Does Surgery Make You Look Older

Recommended Posts

I was in GNC yesterday picking up some things for post op. The guy helping me was literally trying to talk me out of going through with this surgery saying that his girlfriend had it and within 10 months it aged her 8 years! He was saying that several long time customers come in and he says they are not aging nicely. I don't personally know anyone who has had a wls surgery (other that me being banded-didnt work) so I have nothing to go on but photos. I honestly cant tell from photos most of the time. Then he continued to point out Star Jones and Al roker and I thought maybe he was on to something. What have been your experiences? Does anyone feel as though they look like they have aged more drastically?

I have seen some gastric peole who do look older because they got too skinny. However, there are some beautiful people on this forum that have lost a lot of weight and look amazing! I really think it depends on the individual.

I think if you're going to look old,,it doesn't matter the way you lose weight. I'm 47,,have lost near 70 pounds and I'm told I look 10+ years younger..I have good genes and that has alot to do with it.

I think it depends on how much weight you lose and age. Just like the rest of the body you may have lose skin around your face.

It may also depends how u take care of your self and body ... Some wls cause pol to be Vitamin deficiency and Vitamins and drinking plenty of Water could help maybe just a thought

I think it can make older people look even older. This happened to my grandma when she was in her 50s/60s. She had a plump face and the fat kept her wrinkles filled in. She just had this really youthful face. She lost a lot of weight, lots the facial fat, and all of a sudden her wrinkles were highly visible. She really looked like she aged 20 years in just a few months.

First off, you need to report him to his management, and corporate office...it is strictly against their policy to ever, ever offer or discourage medical advise...and again I stress the fact that people will exaggerate when they feel it suits their "good intentions".

Please let us know which store it was so we can avoid it...

I don't think Al would give a damn if he looked aged. if you DO, then wait 20 years, and look back at this opportunity if you do not take it - got a visual?

:/

I dont think so at all. I think it has to do with family genes. If your gonna look old you were anyway regardless if you have fat plumping up those wrinkles. I would rather look a little old than die young though that's for sure. It's all in your head I think ultimately you look how you feel :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
