Post-Surgery Vitamins & Post-Surgery Medication

Recommended Posts

I understand that after surgery, I will have to take chewable/liquid Vitamins, as well as liquid forms of medication (blood pressure medication, cholesterol, etc.). How long after surgery were you able to go back to "regular" medication and vitamins that you simply swallow? Or do you find that you stay on liquid/chewable forms forever after surgery?

my doc had me on my regular meds. I expected to have to change. I take wellbutrin. It doesn't come in a liquid and I was worried about what they would put me on. The pharmacist in the hospital said you can cut it in half, but keep taking it. Each doc is different, depends on your meds but not all meds have to change. So make sure to ask your doc!

Thank you mommymar for the insight. I had a feeling that it could be possible to take the "regular" version of medication rather than having to take everything in liquid/chewable form.

I crushed or opened all meds or supplements at first. I tried to swallow my smallest pill at 3 weeks, it went down fine. Since then I've added more pills increasing in size. Now I swallow everything but ursadoil (or whatever its called) because its huge. I try to divide the amount I swallow, like I don't try to swallow five pills in the morning. Two in the morning, two in afternoon, etc.

I crushed and dissolved the meds that I could at first, but at about 2-3 weeks I started with small pills like JD7176. I just kept adding them one or two at a time and had no problems. Now I swallow 12 pills in the morning in one gulp and four at night. That includes huge Calcium tablets, a Vitamin and several supplements in additional to my prescription meds. Not everyone can swallow a huge handful of pills at one time. I have it down to an art. The point is...you should be able to tolerate your meds just fine if you could before the sleeve. Kathe
