Super Bummed....surgery Cancelled

Recommended Posts

I have been on the liquid diet for 2 weeks!! Surgery was all set to go on the 20th. Had pre op labs yesterday as the final step. Call from my pcp....severely anemic. Have to cancel, see a hematologist, get blood normal then try to restart the process. Could be 3-4 months before starting over.

Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry. My thoughts and prayers are with you. I hope that they get the anemia out of of the way and you decide to go through with when you are all healthy.

O.k.....a real pain in the arse! BUT I would rather you go in "healthy" then not ( then your asking for problems my friend...some that you might not wake up for...if you catch my drift....). So do what they say and know that you had some good practice for the liquid part...you'll be all set. P.S. I am sorry that happened...

Bless your heart. I can only imagine how much of a let down it is. We get so hyped up and ready for surgery. My big fear was not passing my preop exam even though I'd passed the one for my sinis surgery about 6 weeks earlier. Hang in there. They will get your anemia under control and you will have your day.

Thank you all. As a nurse I understand the danger and reason. You just mentally get to a point where you are ready......saw my surgeon yesterday and had everything to go. I've accepted it just was not supposed to happen right now. But it WILL happen. Just not on MY timeline.....

Oh my gosh, I am so sorry to hear this. What a let-down! But try not to let it get you down. You'll have the surgery when the time is right. You're in my prayers.

aww, I am so sorry to hear this happened. Of course it makes sense to start over but it has to be incredibly frustrating just the same.

With respect to the anemia -- make sure your doc gets you on prescription Iron supplements, folic acid, and B12 (they help with iron absorption and suchlike). If you can afford the calories, take the iron with about a half cup of orange juice. I have been there and done that with anemia and one thing I will say is that for me, after just 48 hours of iron supplements I felt TONS more energetic. Good luck!

That certainly stinks. I sat in pre-op for 6 hours hooked up to an IV only to have my surgery cancelled due to complications with the patient in front of me. Had to wait 2 weeks to get back in but in retrospect that is nothing compared to you. Good luck and hang in there.

Oh my gosh, I know how you feel! The same thing happened to me, only I'm not anemic, I have hypothyroidism through the roof. I was scheduled for July 13th, went through the pre-op diet and everything; and they pulled the plug until I can get my thyroid level up.

I know how devastated you are, I've been so upset for days...you spend so long preparing for this and then to have the rug pulled out from underneath you. Obviously, I want to go into surgery as healthy as possible, but this just sucks!

I'm so sorry, for both of us! :(

Uuggghhh!!! I'm sorry. Hopefully we both get healthy......to then make this huge change to become even healthier!! I had to call all my family coming into town to help care for me and my kids and tell them I just have to accept I need to LIVE through the surgery in order for it to be a success. For some reason, it's just not our time at this moment. It doesn't mean it won't. But it does mean I get a piece of cake for my birthday in 5 days.......silver lining??? Not so much :( But it will have to do.

Absolutely,

We WILL do this...just not when we expected. I think the worst part is having my whole schedule flipped inside out and upside down. I've planned my whole life around surgery. I'm a teacher, so I can't do anything during the year. Also, I'm in my brother's wedding, and I don't want to make alterations until I know if and when I'm having surgery. The utter lack of control over anything in my life right now is what's really getting me down!

I get that!!! I had my whole summer already off from work, I'm the incoming pto president at our school so I planned recovery time around all of that. I probably realistically don't know if I can proceed during the school year. Really has turned everything upside down and inside out. At least I know that I am strong enough to make it through this process again. I have no intention of abandoning this goal.

Wow...I really admire your resolve! I have seriously been a puddle of goo these past few days. It takes so much strength to remain positive at this massive disappointment. But, we CAN do it, and we WILL do it! :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
