Food Shopping List For Pre-Op

I brought with me Bigelow Decaff Peppermint Tea and Truvia. I have issues with artificial sweeteners causing me severe headaches, and because most everything has artificial sweeteners in it - sugar-free Jello / sugar-free popsicles, this helped me out tremendously. The tea settled my stomach down and honestly went down better than the Water did at first. If you don't like peppermint find something decaff you like. (ask nurse for a styrofoam cup) otherwise they send you warm Water in a coffee cup (and it smells like coffee usually).

I actually brought it to the hospital with me because I hate regular decaff tea which they serve in the hospital and they usually serve a generic artificial sweetener.

Having a few Isopures on hand will help you. You will not be getting in 80 grams of Protein a day (or even close at first). But it will help if you have a few bottles of it handy (Green Tea with Lemon - (buy some lemon MIO) to help with the flavor was something I used. Each bottle is 20 ounces. I would drink about 4 ounces of it a day sometimes. Orange Isopure with Orange MIO - Grape with grape. You can purchase those at GNC. They usually have them on sale (if no sale as for the bogo. They usually are $5.89 a piece and I can get them at my GNC if I ask for a discount 2 for $8.98.

Make sure you have a chap stick for the hospital (I also recommend a box of Charmaine butt wipes) I also brought from home my freshly laundered and favorite throw blanket, made for sitting in the chair more comfortable. I also brought my own table fan. It made sleeping better.

Good luck to you.

That's Awesome! I know you are so excited!! I haven't scheduled my sleeve yet, still going through my last clearance, but I have to lose a bit of weight before hand. This is what my dietician gave me to go by:

PRE-SURGICAL liquid DIET

Start date:1 week before your surgery date (unless told otherwise by your surgeon)

· Drink 3 - 4 Protein drinks per day. (Refer to pages 22-25.)

· Include 6 servings per day from the following food choices:

o 1 cup skim milk, ½% milk or 1% milk

o 1 cup Tomato juice or regular V-8â juice

o ½ cup plain oatmeal, Cream of Wheatâ or Cream of Riceâ, plain grits

o 6 oz. light yogurt

o ½ cup unsweetened applesauce

o Raw vegetables

· Drink Water or sugar-free beverages as needed during the day such as Water, broth, Crystal-Lightâ, sugar-free Jell-Oâ, decaffeinated coffee or tea.

· Note: It is okay to use sugar substitutes (Splendaâ, Equalâ, Sweet-N-Lowâ, Truviaâ) during any stage of your diet, before or after surgery. Cinnamon is allowed in your hot Cereal.

2 days before your surgery date:

  • Choose Protein Drinks, sugar-free pudding, skim milk, plain oatmeal, Cream of Wheatâ or Cream of Riceâ, plain grits, light yogurt, tomato juice, V-8 juice
  • No applesauce or raw vegetables allowed
  • Continue with above listed serving sizes

The day before your surgery date:

  • Choose water, apple juice, white grape juice, white cranberry juice, chicken or beef broth, Gatoradeâ, Jell-Oâ, popsicles, decaffeinated coffee or tea.
  • NOTHING RED!!
  • Sip liquids throughout the day. Aim for 64 ounces of Fluid (unless you have been told otherwise).

You should have nothing by mouth after midnight the night before surgery.

If you are instructed to take medications the morning of surgery, do so with only small sips of water.

Hope this helps!! Good luck, I will keep you in my prayers :D

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
