Avocado - How Much Is Too Much?

Recommended Posts

I have had a craving lately for avocados... which is completely strange since before about 3 months ago I couldn't stand the taste of them. I do know that avocado's are high in fats and I don't want to be sabotaging my weight loss efforts! I had 1/4 of one this morning with a egg and green pepper omelet and 5 strawberries. I also had about 1/2 of one yesterday.

I did some research and I've seen that one a day is ok, but then somewhere else it says that one per week is ok... I'm so confused!!

cut up the whole thing, eat tlittle bits till you feel satiated (or about 4-5 1"cubes whichever comes first)

Now, take the rest and add oatmeal, cucumber and flax seeds and blend well, apply it to all your stretch marks and face and neck...

My own personal "good in/good out" recipie, lol...

1/4 cup per serving but dont over do it, it's high in cholesterol, I love avocados too and used to eat them right out the shell with a spoon and fresh lemon. I wouldn't do more than one serving per day .

I've been eating avocado regularly since I started mushy foods 3-4 weeks post op. I eat about 1/4-1/2 of a smaller avocado (28-50g) once a day about 3-4 times a week at most. It is has many health benefits and is actually not a high source of cholesterol. It does have a source of plant sterols which can be called a "plant cholesterol" but in moderation, can actually help with high cholesterol. They came highly recommended from two Stanford cardiologists who said the amount I was eating was "just right" and not too much. For how little fat you get in a 1/4 cup serving, it's not enough to worry about. In fat, a healthy balance of the "good" fats can do wonders for weight loss. You can see from my statistics, it hasn't slowed down my loss. Granted, eating a 1/4 cup of guacamole with fried tortilla chips is not the same thing :P

You are good with the avocado. Yes, it's high in fat, but it's monounsaturated fat, which is the heart healthy, artery-unclogging kind. And there is actually no cholesterol in them since they are not an animal product. And Brandy is right, the fat will help keep you satiated. As a dietitian, I actually suggest our patients use avocado in place of mayo since it gives the same mouth feel and it's healthier. Just my 2 cents...hope it helps...

I had 4 small slices last night with my fajita meat..and let me just say that it was PERFECT! I dropped another 2 pounds since Monday so it hasn't slowed mine down either.

Saw a recipe where you use avocado instead of Mayonnaise in deviled eggs. Sounds yummy!

Thanks everyone for your replies! For the little amount that I'm eating everyday, I'm not going to get too worried about it.

Thanks emlefe for the awesome chocolate pudding idea... I'm thinking of trying that soon!

I eat 1/4 to 1/2 of an avocado at a time. I'll do 1/2 if the avocado is small. I also like to blend it with Greek yogurt. It stretches it and adds Protein. Good for a dip or spread that way.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
