Hoping To Be Cleared For Vsg After Breast Cancer

Recommended Posts

Hi I'm Michele,

I was in classes at Kaiser for WL surgery last August when I found out I had breast cancer. A double mastectomy and 6 rounds of chemo later I've completed the mandatory classes and am seeing a surgeon July 31st. I'm terrified they are going to make me wait longer. I'm cleared by my Oncologist and as healthy as I was prior to surgery. The biggest kick to all this is is I can't get reconstructed because my BMI is too high by Kasier's standards, basically I lost my breasts to cancer but they say I'm too fat to get new ones. So if they say no to the surgery that just means a longer wait to have a normal body and be able to ditch the hot, heavy prosthetics. I so sick of waiting. Some days I just wanna cry and the fear the surgeon can control my destiny just like saying no to reconstruction because of my weight weighs heavy on my mind. July 31 can't here fast enough!

So after all that whining are there any women out there that have had VSG after BC?

Thanks for reading.

Hi Michelle

Oooops i just re-read your post - i had CA before my sleeve, not after, but i hope my comments can still help you

14 years go, i found a lump in my breast. They removed my left breast, 2 positive nodes, and I wanted the other breast done too, just in case. I was Stage II

I am fine now all these years :) I am 58 now

I was 44 when i had breast cancer, had reconstruction surgery at the same time as my surgery.

IMO there should be no reason you should be denied for WLS. Your oncologist has completely given his blessing.

We all go through the medical tests by necessary dr., blood work, different dr. giving their approval - your oncologist ok 'd , you having had BC shouldn't be a problem

They didn't qualify you to have reconstruction surgery cuz your BMI is too high? :(

As your weight goes down you would/should be allowed to have the reconstrutive surgery, but i think i'd wait til i had gone down considerably in your WL, I don't know, maybe the dr says you don't have to wait, - however you feel best to do it.

Hopefully you will have no problems when you see the surgeon 7/31 - IMO you shouldn't.

you are one of my fellow CA survivors, that in itself is great ;)

good luck for your surgery and continued health

please write me with a personal message if you have any questions about the CA with the WLS, or anything :)

best wishes

kathy

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
