Wondering how many nurses are being sleeved in general but wondering specifically those being done in July.

RN 37 years as a nurse and I work in a pre op holding area. My surgery is tomorrow July 10th.

I had a hernia repair with the sleeve and I'm having problems with heartburn and hiccups, Did you experience any problems like that after your procedure?

I'm a RN, 43 years old and I have been a Nurse for 17 years, 3 years Med-Surg, 13 years ER and 8months Hospice/Home Health. I just recently had the procedure done on Sept 11,2012. I'm still in the hospital as I type this because for the first 2 days I could not get anything past my diaphragm. Lots of nausea and vomiting. I'm doing mush better today however, now I'm having a lot of heartburn and hiccups. I had a Hiatal hernia repair with the sleeve, Has anybody else experience this?

Yes, the heartburn and hiccups will get better. I was omeprazole every night, and it helped with the heartburn really fast. I had a lot of n/v from my hiatal hernia too, still struggling a little with it at 2 1/2 weeks out. It gets much better. Good Luck!

Thank you for the info, I was starting to worry. The doctor put me on carafate and it's not really helping much. How about the hunger? I'm not really hungry as of yet but I can't really feel and pressure with drinking the liquids. when did you start taking your Vitamins and did you crush them at first to get them down?

I was sooo scared the day of surgery. I was thinking of refusing surgery. I cried n prayed till the last minute. Bcs being a nurse u know too much...I had a nurse pray over me before I went into surgery. But I did what I had to do and I did fine. I got up and walked like I was suppose to. Once I got home I did great. I didn't take the oral liq pain med cause it was a lot. But I didn't need it. The more active I was the better I felt. But, everyone's different. Good Luck, I ll be praying for you!

Hi, I too had a hernia repair with my surgery. I didn't have any nausea or vomiting. My nurse in the hosp said for me to stay on warm liq. Not cold. And to drink 1oz evry 15minutes. To decrease any discomfort. I didnt take my vitamins till 2weeks postoperative chewable. I did have an increase in belching n burping , it was so embarrassing but it decreases n stops. Don't drink ur liq fast u will feel the pressure....remember, drink it slow like a Lady! Lol, it works.

I was told to start the vitamins 2 weeks post-op also, because of the n/v. I take them without a problem now. I'm still only getting a few bites of puréed before I have to stop. I'm barely getting the 60 grams in.

I am a RN in the OB dept at a smaller hospital in southern illinois for 5 years now. It seems like a lot of nurses I personally know and in general are proceding with the sleeve surgery. I didnt know anything about it until a former supervisor had it done and was doing fantastic. I had my psych eval, nurse assessment and nut all done. Next week I see the surgeon for a consult. I have many many questions, as im sure most of us nurses had or do, but im most definite in having this done. This is a great place for the nurses to help keep track of each other as we take this time out for ourselves for a change!!!

I'm an operating room nurse and hope to have surgery in December. I am worried about time off because I really can't afford it but I was thinking at least two weeks but maybe three because my job is very exhausting. Not sure what to do because not planning on telling people and if I take three weeks there will definitely be questions.

Welcome Alabama. I am also a 18+ year OR nurse. I took 2 weeks off because I have a desk job. I definitely could have used the third week off but I am near 60 & waaaay out of shape so I didn't bounce back like I thought.

Are you going to have surgery at a different hospital? You don't have to tell but you are right--people will talk. I personally told everyone & only got a couple of negative remarks. Most everyone was supportive & the ones that weren't, I just told them I didn't ask their permission or for their comments. Haven't heard from them since which is great!

I'm an OR nurse, and I took 3 weeks off. I was mentally ready to go back at 2 weeks, but not physically. I do compressed weekends, so it's intense, and I was wiped out after the first weekend back. I do a lot of ortho trauma, and it was exhausting. If you can, take the 3 weeks.

RN for 20 years, currently doing GI. Planning on telling people: low carb, small portions, exercise and procedure similar to lapband. Then change the subject :) Have you found any good sites for comparing surgeons and their complication rates?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
