I have read a few comments about Hair loss with the gastric sleeve. Is this common? If so, why? When? How long? Can you prevent it? What kind of hair loss are we talking (a few strands here and there or handfuls?)

I've read that this is common with any wl surgery, and is the body's natural response to stress. You start losing about 3-5 months out. I took Protein and Vitamins faithfully, but about a month ago my hair started shedding like crazy. I'm not losing handfulls, but it's SO thin now. Wish I could make a wig from my hairbrush! It's not permanent, but I'm not sure how long it takes before it starts growing back. I may have to start wig shopping soon, but I'm not going to wear a rug on my head when it's 105 out. In the meantime, I use hair thickening Shampoo, conditioner, and hair spray. It helps boost the appearance of volume a lot!

Yes, it is common and I too started losing at about 4 months out. I am losing a lot right now, its kinda freaking me out a bit but what can youd really do, it does grow back...eventually. I too am taking all the Vitamins but have been lackng a bit on my Protein but I am really sticking to the protein now! I am hoping it slows soon, I dont want to lose much more!

I have no regrowth on year and one month later. I don't mean to scare you, but I did some research and you may never get it back. Some people, most people's hair grows back...I just am one of the ones who has nothing yet. I was upset, but what can you do. I always say prepare for the worst and hope for the best.

I started losing mine 4 months out. I ended up cutting it short to give it a thick appearance. It has started thickening up but length wise it is growing slower than normal. I take bioten and it helped.

This REALLY scares me! I don't want to have big clumps of hair missing and have to resort to wearing a wig. I'm not really sure being sleeved is worth it for that consequence. I'm just not wiling to wear a wig!

Anybody had no hairloss or very minimal?

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
