How Much Protein, Carbs Etc Is Recommended?

My surgeon does not favour high Protein ( one of his recommendations for soft food is Pasta which is NEVER going to happen) - I am on full liquids at the moment, and have not been given any recommendations of percentages of carbs and protein to aim for- what has everyone else been recommended? I'd love to know.

Post surgery? I think a lot of folks and my NUT's give the same recommendation - 600-800 calories a day, 80+ g of Protein, and the lower your carbs the faster you will burn fat - i.e. the sweet spot is generally below 50 g a day. I feel better when I get my calries up through dense Protein (helllo chicken breasts - I'm going to start clucking soon lol) - and drop the carbs to 20 and under, which can be a challenge with chewable Vitamins having carbs - and delectable nectarines being in season. I dont worry about fat - selecting the right healthy fats is better for our WL, and it is carbs and insulin response that make us pile on the lbs - not fat :) with that said - mine is usually pretty low per day - between 10-40g.

Mind you I did not come anywhere close to those numbers until this last week - I was lucky to get 2-300 cals in when I first got home. I did soft scrambled eggs rather than mashed potatoes or Beans - both of which are big trigger foods for me.

Thanks for that- VERY interesting. I will have to think of ways to up my Protein with the very narrow range of shakes etc here.

My doctor recommends 75-100 carbs a day, choose whole grain or whole wheat products. I get less carbs in because I don't tolerate them well and I think those numbers are too high. He also wants us to get in 70 grams of Protein a day. Good luck!

Why eat any whole grain or whole wheat at all? You can get in plenty of carbs without eating starches. Whole wheat still has a very high glycemic index. You are much better off eating legumes, broccoli and greens for your carbs. Think low GI carbs.

But having said that, get your Protein in first. Egg beaters with a little cheese can be your new best friend once you start soft foods. I'm still having them for Breakfast everyday but somedays I add a little chopped up fajita meat them. Yum yum.

Whole grains are good for us in moderation and I'm sure at the right time after surgery. I always think about the food Pyramid and believe that everything on it is fine for us in moderation.

Sorry,,guess I didn't post that right. I was just answering the OP question about what was recommended for us. I do get in my Protein first and my carbs don't just exist of whole wheat,,that is just a recommendation from my doctor versus white bread or flour..if I eat any bread on a rare occasion, it's whole wheat or grain.

I always think of the old pyramid with its 6-11 servings of bread a day but only 2-4 servings of fruit. Is it any wonder the whole country is getting fat? Those high GI foods hinder weightloss and eventually cause diabetes. We don't need them.

Yep way too much food on that pyramid! Or perhaps they need to decide what a serving is on that thing

In the Class with the nut she said to aim for 60 minimum grams of Protein and that eventually after fully healed our goal should be 1000 to 1400 cal a day. She didn't say how many carbs

        Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

        Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
