Taste Buds Completely Changed After Surgery!

Recommended Posts

I'm still on full liquids and things that I use to love, that I thought I would be able to eat....I can't stand. The only thing that has hit my taste buds is potato Soup strained. Has anyone else experienced this. It was things I have always ate I just can't stomach. Am I abnormal?

Well, so far it sounds like you're on the right track!! ;) Yes, your tastebuds do change some. Some of it comes back and some does not. I was a total chocoholic before surgery, and now, it really is not that impressive. It's very strange. I've had a few bites and every time I wait for that rush of pleasure and wonderment that chocolate gives... and ......*fizzle*

It can be a good thing!

Thanks for that little bit of knowledge. I am a total chocolate freak. Knowing that I may not like it is very encouraging.

Totally normal. Your taste buds will always be a little different but you will be able to tolerate foods better later on. There are some things that I liked before surgery but can't even stand the smell after. I feel my sense of smell is also stronger and different. Pretty much everything changed but I feel for the better.

Dear God please can sleevie save me from the chocolate monster...... I would flipping LOVE it if chocolate was "not impressive" any more - it has been my utter undoing.

I hope mine says I don't like much of anything anymore LOL Because I do love food! I love to cook and bake!

Italian and mexican are my faves! But I love good fried chicken too! LOL I just love food dammit, I DO!

But, I just don't feel full all the time & that will be the biggest improvement with this sleeve! I will actually feel full!

You wont feel full....you will feel like...food what is food? ...eww this stuff is gross... trust me you just will not want to eat at all...except the head hunger...that's a different story...for the first 2 weeks good luck getting 300 calories and 50grams Protein and 64 oz Water...

I tell you...it truly is a whole new world postop.... a new fantastic point of view on food....Hmm...just had an Alladdin moment...lol

Don't have buyers regret though...just grouchy its not as easy as I thought it would be...its actually as tough now to eat as it used to be to not eat lol..go figure....but if it works for me..it'll work for most I'm sure...

I'm down 20 since last Monday..I'm one week postop.

It's normal, so work it to your advantage!

Some tastes do come back but most of my aversions have stuck with me. I used to LOVE fries or greasy chips and can't stand more than one or two now. It's nice to kick that habit. I used to crave french fries and it led me into the drive thru cycle more than once.

My time off dairy (lactose intolerance) left me with a dislike of heavy, creamy sauces and cream Soups. I can eat them now, they just aren't as satisfying as they were prior to surgery.

I had a Protein shake I bought a two pound tub of because I loved it pre-op, but it tasted awful to me after surgery.

I'm a cook and a serious baker and for the longest time food held absolutely no appeal for me. It wasn't until sometime around one year out that I had my first meal where I sat back and said, "Wow, that was good." It comes back, but that huge break where I didn't care for food really taught me how to handle my portions and how to eat in moderation. I'm grateful my tool gave me that extra perk. I'm better adjusted in maintenance because of this. I can bake six dozen Cookies or five loaves of bread in a day and have them in the house without feeling like it's a constant temptation. It's just food, and I can eat a little if I want, but it doesn't control me the way it used to.

Best of luck and swift healing! It gets easier.

~Cheri

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
