Extreme Fatigue And Palpitations

Recommended Posts

I am 2 months post op and for the past month am experiencing heart palpitations, extreme fatigue, weakness, and feeling a bit short of breath which seems to occur due to what feels like my heart is pounding. I am being weaned off of several blood pressure meds, am getting my Protein and fluids in...any one else experience anything similar?

I experienced heart palpitations and fatigue when I was younger. I discovered that my heart palpitations occured as a result of a magnesium deficiency. I no longer experience the palpitations as long as I take an extra magnesium supplement with my Multivitamin. My doctor also told me that chocolate and caffeine can cause palpitations. Your shortness of breath could be caused by the anxiety that results from the palpitations, however, it would be a good idea to get it checked out by a doctor. I have also been diagnosed with insulin resistance and cyclical hypothyroidism which causes my fatigue. However, other people on this board are healed of their insulin resistance after the operation in which case I wonder if your fatigue could be caused by the low calorie diet. Have you tried increasing your calories?

My first thought off the bat is you're not getting enough fluids. I know you said you are getting them in, but you live in Texas, so I know it's not chilly there. You probably need to increase your fluids exponentially. Try G2 or Powerade zero (no calories. G2 has a few). Sounds like you need some electrolytes and fluids. I think we have a tendency to run short on fluids faster than others. I get the pounding when dehydrated. This is just a thought. If you are concerned about your symptoms, see a doc right away.

It could be lack of electrolytes, and/or lack of potassium. You can take supplements for that. Powerade Zero has added electrolytes and potassium.

Thanks all! I went to the ER because this has been going on for a month now, and I work for my bariatric surgeon, so this is what I do all day, everyday. I was not deficient in any areas. I am making sure to get an adequate amount of calories with a balanced diet. The only thing I can think of is the fact of them weaning me from 3 HBP meds to all most none at all. I think the Toprol XL was keeping my ole' ticker from going bizerk as I was diagnosed with irregular heart beat as a child.

Scheduled to see my cardiologist Friday! Thanks again!

My magnesium deficiency never showed up in any tests and doctors never told me about it. I discovered it on my own after several years.

Thanks Cleo! I will definitely look into that! It could be the case! I will get my surgeon to let me know how much I should take and in what form.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
