Is Anyone Else On The Optifast Shakes For Pre-Op?

Recommended Posts

I have been on them since Tuesday last week, but there hasn't been a day tgat i haven't had something else, like an egg or some tuna fish. Six shakes a day is a driving me crazy and then I feel guilty for eating anything. Please no judgment, I realize thus surgery is elective and I should be more focused on sticking to the shakes only. I see a lot of people talk about their preop diets, where they can eat food, so just wondering if anyone else out there was told to do the shakes only for 2 weeks before their surgery date.

Hope everyone is having a great night

Wow, that has got to be the most stringent pre-op I've seen. Mine consisted of 2 days of liquids & yogurt, then nothing at all 6hrs before surgery.

I had to do liquids for 2 weeks. I felt like crap for the first 3 days, but then was just fine. I had Atkins Advantage premixed for Breakfast everyday. I also bought 1st Phorm powder mix and had 1 or 2 a day. I didn't have any food though and drank Water w/ crystal light. I was supposed to drink 5-8 shakes a day, but couldn't do that...ugh. In those 2 weeks I lost 20.8 lbs and as of tomorrow I will be 1 week post-op. Hang in there...it gets easier!

I'm surprised anyone is with the carbs that are in them. IMO 20g carbs is high but while writing this, the point is to lose fat around the liver and not weight, so I guess since they are no or low far it makes since!

Nevermind go on with your business LOL

My doctor has put me on a 6 week pre op diet but I am allowed 1 normal meal at night, so 1 shake for breakfast, 1 for lunch and then lean meat and lots of vegies for tea.

I did Optifast for 2.5 weeks pre op and lost 25 pounds. I ould have the shake for breakfast, a bar for lunch and the Soup for dinner. I added a cup of veges to the Soup and also had miso soup at lunch with a cup of veges. Sometimes I replaced the evening soup with another miso and veges and followed with an Optifast dessert which was divine.

This is the recommended optifast diet and was supported by my surgeon and nut. I found it easy really as it varied and was not all liquid with the added veges and the bar.

25 pounds in2.5 weeks was worth it!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
