Protein Supplement Ideas!

Recommended Posts

Just had my consult with my doctor Friday the 6th. Very overwhelming to say the least. I have made my decision to push forward with the surgery. Have great friends and family that will help me get througth it. I've been reading all of your wonderful posts for over a month here and never made the decision to join you all til today. We all need all the help, support and encouragement we can get!

My question to anyone out there is during the clear liquid diet, which is the best Protein supplement you have used that got you through 2 weeks of this diet. Any information would be extremely helpful as my head is still realing from all the information i've received since Friday. I have diabetes and I'm doing this first and foremost for that but also to enjoy a more comfortable life without the weight, and to enjoy my new granddaughter Madelyn Marie, who is the light of my life.

There are SO many different Protein supplements out there it can be so confusing. I've tried tons of them and the only 2 protein supplements that I can stomach are Isopure and Syntrax Nectar. Good luck!! :D

I tried Isopure this week. It was horrible to me ! Had a bad smell after I drank it. Guess it varies from person to person. I tried the grape and the peach...both had the same horrible after taste and smell after one drink. Im going to have to find something. Im only getting about 5 g Protein a day now and tomorrow is starting week 3.

I need one of those pills too! If you find one let me know. ;) I'm sure it has at least a little...it's meat, right? I sucked on one Reese's Pieces until it dissolved last night telling myself the same thing, Peanut Butter has Protein. LOL

I don't miss sweets yet. Today we ate at a Steak house and I ordered the appetizer of lemon pepper shrimp. It was so good. Four pieces and I was full though.

Tonight I craved squash so I cooked some for my husband and ate like 4 pieces. Was soooo good. I hope me sampling doesn't slow down the weight loss.

Down 49 + pounds this morning. Drinking LOTS of Water.< /p>

When I was on clears the only Proteins I had were unflavored added to broth - my list of okay foods didn't include Protein shakes at that point.

Only you know what you'll like but powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury was foul to me. The smell was awful and I was only able to tolerate a Tbs. or so of powder in my Soup, which defeats the purpose, anyway!

I LOVE Syntrax Medical Unflavored. It blends well into hot, warm, room temp and cool liquids with no lumps. I use a shaker cup and have no trouble. It has no real flavor or funky smell. I wish I had known about it in the clears stage. A lot of people like Isopure but I couldn't tolerate it. Maybe try to have a few different flavors on hand for post op to try again. My tastes changed immediately post op and the things I thought I was going to love because they tasted good to me prior to surgery tasted awful. You never know what will happen until you're there!

Immediately post op it's more important to focus on hydration and healing than hitting Protein goals, but every little bit helps. You'll want carbs in the early days because you're going to be dragging until you adjust to a very low calorie diet. I didn't regularly hit my nutritional goals until a few months out. It's a real challenge early on, so don't get too discouraged or frustrated if you have a problem, too.

Good luck,

~Cheri

I am overwhelmed with information at this point too, so exactly where do you buy the Protein Drinks? At the supermarket? Which area would you find it? Or at a vitiamin/health food store. I would appreciate any direction on where to find these things.

I don't have a surgery date yet, still going thru other required appointments, but my thought at this point, is I don't know if I could EVER puree chicken or turkey or the like for Protein. Comments on how to get use to this idea?

My favorites have been Syntrax Nectar strawberry mousse, I tried the kiwi strawberry and Twisted cherry nectar but didn't like them as much. I also use the Unjury chicked Soup it tastes great and has 20 g of Protein, it actually gets me full and I'm 498. First 3 days of the liquid diet was rough for me but once I got past the carb and sugar withdrawals I was fine. Another good thing to do is make some broths, chicken or beef. It taste much better and you can control the amount of salt, I just let it simmer for hours strain it and let it cool to skim off the fat on top ( if any, I used lean cuts or trimmed ) plus you can always freeze anything leftover for post-op.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
