Newly Banded 28 Aug 06

Recommended Posts

Hello All,

I am newly banded. So far things have been going great, unless you count me throwing up just now. And now of course I am a little nervouse. Since I know this is a no-no. Not to be to gross, but the throw up was more like a big burp and the gatorade I drank just came right up. So the question of the day, did I damage anything. Any words of wisdom are appreciated.

I was just banded this past Monday 8/28 in Melbourne, FL. The first couple days I slept a lot from pain meds and thought I was doing great, then Thurday rolled around and I was nauseated and had the runs and my tummy is blah. I need to find something more satisfying than broth and Jello and popsicles. Sunday, I advance to milk products.:) I hope that will help me feel better.

Hi Newbies!

Lanie you had your first PB or Productive Burp! I don't think you hurt anything. You probably drank a little too fast or two big of a gulp. Just take things easy and you should be just fine!

Mstrish I think you're right...pain meds can make your tummy upset. And "digestive issues" are pretty common for the newly banded. If it gets really bad then you may want to call your doctor.

Happy healing and welcome!!

Are you drinking through a straw or drinking regularly with the cup to your lips and gulping? I drank through a straw for the first four weeks, maybe more. That might help you keep it down.

Post op my surgeon instructed me to not injest anything that could not be sucked through a straw, and I was on that for 2 weeks. Protein Shakes, Soups and drinks (water, Crystal Light) Definitely different doctors have different recommendations but that was what my doctor told me to do and I was fine.

I was banded on 8/24, and I had vomiting too; however, I threw up absolutely NOTHING......just a lot of air with the dry heaves. It was AWFUL. I bet you have a lot of restriction because of swelling. My doc told me that if I was throwing up fluids it was because they were "stuck" in my pouch b/c of swelling. The nurse at my doc's office said she threw up a lot after being banded, and she has had no problems with slippage. That gave me a little comfort! Good luck! The first week was hell for me, BUT there is light at the end of the tunnel. I feel better every single day!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
