Surgery Postponed Due To Thyroid Issues....help!

Recommended Posts

Hello VSG community, I need some help! I was scheduled to be sleeved on Friday the 13th of July (AKA in a week!), My doctor was going through all my labs in my final pre-op appointment. Now, I know that she has missed several of my appointments in the past six months, because she was on maternity leave. She took a look at my thyroid levels, and she looked worried. Now, mind you, my thyroid has always been out of whack, which was a big reason for having surgery in the first place. But she told me that my levels were too high (they were in the 60s range). She did some urgent bloodwork, which came back today and they have jumped into the 100s! She said that we can't go through with surgery because of the risks with anesthesia. I was devastated yesterday, and I did a lot of ugly crying in her office. I had been preparing for this surgery for over a year. I've been to six months of classes, sleep tests, swallow tests, pre-admission testing, eleven days of the dreaded pre-op diet and of course countless blood tests. I am so frustrated with how things have turned out. Obviously, I do not want to die on the operating table, and of course, put in perspective....postponing the procedure is not the end of the world. But I am really upset. I need some support and some advice! Has anyone else had to deal with this, particularly with the thyroid disease? Thanks!

-Liz

In the 100's? You've got HYPOthyroid big time! I have no advice for you, I'm sorry. I haven't been sleeved yet. I don't have a thyroid, so I struggle with my numbers never being right. I do ask for frequent blood test checks, though because I can tell when it's slightly off. My facial skin feels lke I need to buff it with a pumice stone! Lol. Good luck!!

Seriously, my hypothyroidism is rampant. I was put on a serious regiment of mess to try to get it down. Also, I got an urgent appointment with a thyroid specialist for Thursday.

Thanks for the support!

Sorry to hear that! I have hypothyroid too, although not that severely. I've been on Synthroid for about a year now and it's doing well and stable. Hang in there, it shouldn't take too long to fix hopefully!

I too had a surgery postponed due to Graves Disease! I had Hyperthyroidism and I had radiation therapy, and that stopped the function of my thyroid PERIOD. So now I take Levothyroxine and I will have to take this for the REST OF MY LIFE! That was in 2007 and Not to discourage you, but this year has been the first time that my doctor has said that surgery is okay now. It may not take so long for you, but I got discouraged and just checked out on surgery and gave up for about 4 years. It wasnt until my mother had a heart attack and my health declined even more to the point that I broke a bone in my heel and the bone fragment is now lodged in my tendon. How did I break this bone....He told me from being to heavy for my feet. NOW, I am really ashamed. So here I am...going for surgery again. This time NOTHING IS GOING TO STOP ME! Hang in there. Take your medications as prescribed and it may take a couple to six months to get your levels on track..but you will get there. Good Luck!

Wow...four years! That is intense. I'm so sorry to hear that! I have been on levothyroxine for a years, and I will be on it forever. Seriously, I don't think that I have enough discipline as you've had...four years seems like a lifetime away! Even four months seems like forever!

Thanks for the advice and support!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
