Recovery: Will I Be Pushing It?

Recommended Posts

My husband I go to a music festival every year the end of July. Tickets are pretty expensive, and this year they were given to us as gifts. Not going has not been an option for over twenty years. However, my surgery got scheduled for the Monday before. Am I crazy to think I'll be okay there, if I am just lounging in the shade and resting most of the time, four days later? I figure I'd be home on the couch, why not just sit by the river and enjoy great music? Thoughts?

I dunno - everyone is different, my husband was out mowing the lawn and doing yardwork 4 days after surgery - while I had complications and was still in the hospital. There is no way I would have been able to do to a festival within even the first two weeks post surgery, but there are lots of folks here that were raring to go right after surgery.

It is true everyone is different. however, I had zero pain and was back to my daily normal routine (all though careful) by day 2 after surgery

Four days out I only wanted to be home. Everyone is different. You might have to just wait and see how you feel. :)

I was in the hospital 5 days. I had a drain taken out 9 days after the hospital. Are you doing to be having a drain? What are you going to be sitting on. Getting in and out of bed was tough for me. I had a hernia repair and adhesion removal and a complication. I couldn't get on the ground for the first two weeks, even if you paid me.

Sometimes guys do have an easier time. Their insides are different, I had a c-section, a complete hysterectomy, several laparascopies and my gallbladder out prior to vsg. All people are different, but take it one day at a time, I wouldn't push it, I would hate to be back in the hospital for dehydration. I am sure you would be disappointed if you couldn't go, but perhaps playing it by ear and realizing your health is more important than a once a year concert. Oh yeah, at first, liquid in - liquid out, going potty in a port-a-potty a few days out, probably not too hygienic for someone that just had surgery.

Just my opinion.

Not sure how big the festival is, but I would see about getting something that confirms you are recovering from surgery and see if you can get some special parking or something. I would be most concerned about getting dehydrated. Doing more and being in the heat (well, maybe not so bad in CO) may work against you hydration wise. And remember you can't lift or carry anything... Be safe!!!!

Thanks everyone for the input. It is big, lots of space in the shade. So, I plan to take a lounge chair, and cooler with my Water and Protein. I was going to ask for handicap parking and I have a wonderful husband who will carry everything for me. We agreed too, that I'll go home if I feel the need too, and best of all: NO porta-potties! All flush toilets. I was told one night and a drain for the day. Of course things can go different ways, but I'm hell-bent on doing everything I can for a speedy recovery.

I had surgery in TJ and on day 4 was taking my daughter to the San Diego zoo, and then seaworld, safari park etc, we vacationed for 9 days total! And so no I don't think it would be to much but only you can determine that, just bring an extra comfy cloth and chair and walk

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
