Insulin Pump Settings

Recommended Posts

Hi all. I am a type 1.5 diabetic, which means adult onset type 1. I was diagnosed in1995 and have been on the pump since 2005. I am a brittle diabetic, highs and lows. Surgery date is August 20th. . My question is about basal settings. When should I start changing them. I do not have a pre op diet but need to concentrate on reducing carbs, Protein first, small bites, well chewd, no drink with meals, etc. and afterwards, of course I will need little insulin, eating so little. But basals are continuous. I do not want to go back to shots. Maybe I should ask my endo for an insulin pen instead, at least for the first yew weeks. Hmmmm. Lots to think about.

I say ask the endo - I know the people I know with pumps have a very hard time getting them set right with any change in their life.

Your endo is the best person to ask! :)

Hey Audrey,

I also have Adult Onset Type 1. So much fun, isn't it? ;) I had the sleeve before trying to start with the pump so I'm not much help on settings and such, but my endo is the one who suggested this surgery and gave me list of how to take my insulin before the surgery and after in the different stages of feeding (liquid, mushies, soft, etc...) I'm 5 weeks out and I will say the results so far have been amazing! I went from taking between 60-90 units of insulin a day total to about 2 units every other day. Now that I'm eating more solids, I'm just taking a nightly dose of 6 units of Lantus and it's keeping my blood sugars stable all day. This is surgery is truly a miracle! Good luck! :) P.S. I've never met another Adult Onset Type 1...apparently we are pretty rare! Nice to meet you!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
