Questions about GERD

Recommended Posts

I have a friend that was banded in July. She was doing fine until about 4 weeks post op and ate some crackers. She ended up having pain and has had problems with pain (while eating) ever since.

She's had an upper GI, a Barium Swallow test and an Endoscopy with all tests coming back negative. We're now thinking that she might be experiencing GERD

If anyone has been diagnosed with GERD, what are the treatments for it? Does it ever go away, or is this something you continually deal with?

Thanks!

Tricia...GERD-and-the-band is a huge issue. The band tends to CURE reflux in those who have it pre-banding but can CAUSE reflux in those who never had it.

Many people learn to live with it and treat it with proton pump inhibitors, elevating the bed, not eating after a certain hour, avoiding spicy things, etc. Others--myself included--have decided that it made more sense to get rid of the CAUSE of the problem* and have moved on to other surgeries.

(*I had more than just GERD, but it was one of my first problems with the band.)

I never had reflux until I had my band. I take Nexium daily and won't eat anything after 8:00 p.m. This helps me. I can still drink milk and Water in the evening, but nothing to eat. I tried all the over counter meds, and they don't seem to work as well, but to some it is worth a try?

I guess I'm one of the lucky ones. I suffered with reflux for years and was on constant medication. I haven't had to take anything for the last 2 or 3 months. Not a problem any more.

Small frequent meals rather than 3 full ones a day, not eating for 2 hours before going to bed and acid blockers (Nexium, Prevacid, Pepcid, Zantac, etc.) all help.

I think it's true...I had real problems with GERD pre-band but now it's completely gone. That really sucks for those who get it post-band. But, when I did have GERD, I never ate past 8PM or else I couldn't sleep. Just a thought.

I, too, have problems with GERD for many years. I will let you all know what happens after I get my band. Hoping i am one of the lucky ones, and it disappears!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
