Hi Seminole, Mayflower and Tess! Welcome to the post!

Seiminole - you seem to be doing great! Keep up the good work.

Mayflower - sorry to hear about the autoimmune disease. That is tough. Steroids do wreak havoc on your body. But keep at it. You'll get there!

Tess - I'm only a few days out but I can already see that this is not going to be a walk in the park. You've done great so far and are only 30lbs from goal. You can do it!!

Hi everyone. I am scheduled for surgery on November 9th and while I am a bit apprehensive, I can't wait to get it done. My family is realy supportive but it isn't the same as having those of you who have gone before me. I will definitely keep posting here and would love to get together as we all make this journey TOGETHER!:clap2: :clap2: :clap2: :clap2:

Hi!

I will be having my follow up at BI but could not have surgery covered in the states. I did a lot of research and while I would rather have stayed right here, at least my follow up will be local. I live in Northboro (Worcester County). Where are you from?:)

Hi everyone I am from the Worcester area and have just had my first appt this week at the weight center at Umass Medical. I had my intake physical. I dont have a bmi of 40 but it is over 35 and i have diabetes and high blood pressure. I was told i will probably be okay and will be approved for the wls. Great! so I mentioned the lap band. the Dr told me he would probably recommend bypass.. I was very surprised. He said they are getting better results with bypass instead of lapband with diabetics. I was really surprised by that and honestly a little upset. I really thought the lap band would be the way to go. I was wondering if anyone else was told they should have the bypass instead of the band? I know everyones medical history is different so any feedback would be appreciated!

Hi kimmi. At the info sessions I went to at BI, they mentioned that there is something with gastric bypass and the hormone changes that happen from cutting the stomach that almost always cures diabetes. I want to say it was something like 85 or 90%. Perhaps while you are in the research phase you should check out another hospital's info session, like Beth Israel, and see what they have to say.

That being said I think it is your choice to decide which surgery you would like to have. Granted you should talk to doctors and listen to what they have to say, but there is a very big difference between gastric bypass and the band and it's your body. Your body = your choice.

Keep us updated as you go along!

Hey Kimmi, I live in the Springfield, Mass area and had my lapband surgery on 8/17/06 at Bay State Medical, by Dr. Haag. I am an insulin dependent diabetic and take meds for hypertension, I choose to do the lapband because I don't need to lose over 100 lbs and I felt more comfortable with the less invasive surgery. I am now 30lbs less and I am taking less insulin, I was on two shots a day and I am down to one (only if needed do I take two shots), but the majority of the time I only take one and I feel so good. I am gonna see my doctor and ask if I can try getting on oral meds, and if all goes well I can get off of everything. My doctor told me that I should go for what ever surgery I felt comfortable with. I wish you all the luck with your decision. If you need a friend, let me know.

Hi MA Bandsters. SherryW, myself, and a couple of other MA Bandsters are going to set up a chat in the chat room portion of this site around 7pm tonight. No real agenda just yet, but we thought an on-line support group is better than no support group! So hope you fellow MA Bandsters can join us. If you're not from MA and still want to join us, feel free!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
